Grease the gear teeth, but put no grease on the bearing surfaces.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePull out the drive shaft (18) with a winch handle. Clean the roller bearings (8) in soapy water with a soft cloth.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLeave the retaining ring (7) and ball bearings (6) in place and clean the balls with soapy water and a small brush.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRemove the 8 M10 hex head bolts (11) and lift the centre stem (5) off the base (4). Remove and dismantle the central gear set (3) and 3rd speed gear set (2); clean gears, pawls and springs in white\/mineral spirits.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eReassemble both sets with a very thin film of Andersen Winch Grease on the pawls (no other grease), check each pawl returns smoothly under its spring (replace springs if not), and grease gearwheels and teeth.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"om-h\"\u003eMain Drive Gear Set (1)\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIt contains the clutch that gives 3rd or 1st gear when the handle turns clockwise. Remove it from the base as one unit.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLift off and clean the overdrive gear; check teeth and bearing surfaces for wear.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTurn the lower part upside down, remove the 8 screws, lift off the closing plate and freewheel gear, then clean the pawls and springs in the bronze pawl carrier. Change these pawl springs every two years or so.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSeparate the drive gearwheel from the pawl carrier to reach the springs that control the gear-shifting torque; clean them and check the 4 angled sliders for wear.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePull out the 4 auto-switch pawls from the drive gearwheel – their profile differs from standard pawls, so keep them separate.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eReassemble with the 4 sliders aligned to their slide paths; grease teeth, bearing surfaces and slide paths, and a very thin film on the pawls. A flat screwdriver helps engage the pawls when fitting the overdrive gear.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRefit main drive gear set (1), central gear set (3) – its two collets fully in the shaft groove and held by the retainer – then 3rd speed gear set (2). Check all gears run freely before tightening the 8 M10 bolts (11), then refit bearings, drive shaft, drum and arm and repeat the operation
