See your model's measurements for the recommended depth below the waterline.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAs a general recommendation the tunnel should be at least 1\/4 of the tunnel diameter from the keel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"om-h\"\u003eTunnel Length\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAvoid tunnels longer than 4 x the tunnel diameter: friction slows the water and the thrust.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDo not let the top and bottom tunnel walls differ excessively in length (e.g. top wall 4 x the bottom wall).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eToo short (usually the bottom section) and the flow cannot straighten before the propeller: cavitation, less thrust, more noise.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePropellers and gearleg must be entirely inside the tunnel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFlat bottom hulls need a longer tunnel than standard to avoid a circular vacuum between thruster and hull; high-speed boats need extra length (a spoiler can count) to protect the propeller.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLong tunnels can flex over time and may need extra support – consult a naval architect.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"om-block\" id=\"om-sail\"\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"om-h\"\u003eSailboats and Water Deflection\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eMany sailboats have a flat, shallow bow section. Fit the tunnel halfway into the underside of the hull and fair it with a deflector\/spoiler that directs the flow around it – used by some of the largest sailboat builders, with little to no speed loss under normal cruising.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eA flat back face of the tunnel facing the flow creates drag. Best fix: a recess in the hull at the back of the tunnel, normally angled slightly down.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAlternative: a deflector\/spoiler in front of and under the tunnel – easiest by keeping part of the lower forward tunnel during installation and moulding a soft curve from the hull.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWithout deflection the propeller can freewheel and make noise under sail, and water forced through the tunnel at speed or in waves can damage the thruster. Above about 25 knots the spoiler must protect from the front and from below.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRule of thumb: standing in front of the boat looking aft, you should not see the back face of the tunnel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"om-block\" id=\"om-ends\"\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"om-h\"\u003eRounded Tunnel Ends\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRound the tunnel-to-hull edge as much as possible, minimum radius 10% of the tunnel diameter (R = 0,1 x D). Steel\/aluminium hulls: a slope of 10-15% of the diameter works similarly.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSharp ends create turbulence\/cavitation that blocks the outer tunnel area, cuts thrust and adds noise.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRounded ends let the thruster draw water along the hull side, creating a vacuum that pulls the boat sideways: in optimal installations 30 - 40% extra thrust.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eA Sleipner propeller does not cavitate at working speed: cavitation noise in the tunnel comes from the tunnel installation.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"om-block\" id=\"om-install\"\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"om-h\"\u003eInstalling a GRP Tunnel\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFind the position from this manual and your thruster's measurements; mark the tunnel centre on both sides of the hull and drill a horizontal hole through.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eMark the circle for the tunnel opening (tunnel outside diameter) and cut the hole (a special tool is available).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGrind the gel coat back to real fibreglass in a sufficient area inside and outside the hull.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eInsert the tunnel and mark its shape to the hull (leave front\/underside material if you will make a deflector).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCut the tunnel ends to shape, sand lightly and clean with acetone or similar. Do not add fibreglass where the thruster will sit.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eBond the tunnel to the inside of the hull with sufficient layers, preferably alternating mat and roving; fill all gaps completely with resin\/fibreglass.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eRound the outer edges to 10% of the diameter, laminate additional layers outside over a sufficient area, and do the same for any deflector.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eApply a waterproof coating on all ground and moulded areas. Original Sleipner tunnels (GRP) are fully waterproof except where cut and bonded.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"om-note\"\u003eGeneral guidance only: problems from faulty tunnel installation are the installer's responsibility.
