When choosing a windlass, always take into account your boat’s size, displacement, and overall design:
- Heavier vessels or boats with higher windage naturally place more strain on the ground tackle, so they require a larger, more powerful windlass to operate efficiently.
- Light cruising sailboats, heavy trawlers, and performance yachts all have very different demands, and your anchoring system should match those real-world conditions.
Anchoring environment also plays a major role. If you regularly anchor in strong currents, deep water, rocky bottoms, or high-wind locations, you’ll want a windlass that offers higher pulling power and increased durability.
