Furling Lines and Loops: Match the Line to Your Furler, Diameter and Length

A furling line is the line you pull to roll the sail in and out, and the right one is set by your furler, not by taste. The decisions are the furler model it is made for, the diameter, and the length. This collection carries furling lines for Harken ESP units, Facnor FD and FX furlers, and MAURIPRO furling loops sized by boat length.

Furling Line Families in This Collection
  • Harken furling line, double braid: made for the ESP units — 7 mm by 55 ft for ESP Unit 0, 7 mm by 70 ft for ESP Unit 1 and 8 mm by 100 ft for ESP Unit 2. Harken describes it as low-stretch and resistant to abrasion and UV.
  • Facnor furling line and web assembled (FD): for the FD furlers, in 8 mm with a 32.8 ft web (FD 90 and FD 110) and in 10 mm with 59.0, 65.6 or 90.8 ft of web. The drum half-guides for the FD170, FD210 and FD230 close the drum and guide the webbing.
  • Facnor furling line loops (FX): 6 mm in 39.0 and 52.0 ft and 8 mm in 52.0 and 65.0 ft — for example the 6 mm, 52 ft loop.
  • MAURIPRO furling loops: closed loops in Cruiser XTS Grip polyester double braid, recommended for cruising and racing sailboats. 8 mm in 46, 50, 56, 60 and 66 ft; 10 mm in 70, 76, 80, 86, 90 and 96 ft. Browse the MAURIPRO furling lines.

Choosing the Diameter

Match the line to the drum and the furler model. The sizes in this collection run from 6 to 10 mm: Harken 7 mm for ESP Units 0 and 1 and 8 mm for Unit 2, Facnor 8 or 10 mm on the FD and 6 or 8 mm on the FX, and MAURIPRO 8 or 10 mm. Our furling line diameter guide works through it by furler.

Choosing the Length

Length is listed per furler model on the Harken and Facnor lines. For the MAURIPRO loops, the listing gives the boat length each loop is for:

  • 8 mm, 46 ft: boats up to 25 ft.
  • 8 mm, 66 ft: boats up to 35 ft.
  • 10 mm, 70 ft: boats up to 37 ft.
  • 10 mm, 96 ft: boats up to 50 ft.

Each loop's length is twice its circumference: the 96 ft loop has a circumference of 48 ft. If your boat needs a different length or specification, MAURIPRO's rigging department can advise. For the full method, read How to Choose Furling Lines.

Line, Loop or Line and Web
  • Furling line: the Harken ESP lines, sold as a line in a set length for a given unit.
  • Furling loop: a closed loop, as in the MAURIPRO and Facnor FX ranges.
  • Line and web assembled: the Facnor FD range, where the line comes joined to the web that winds on the drum.
Leading the Line Aft

The furling line runs from the drum to the cockpit through leads on the stanchions. Fairleads and blocks for that run are in Stanchion Mounts and Fairleads, from Harken, Spinlock, Facnor and Schaefer.

Who It's For

Owners replacing a worn furling line, refit projects that need the correct line for a Harken, Facnor or similar furler, and sailors sizing a loop to their boat length. Every line is curated by MAURIPRO Sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What diameter furling line do I need?
It depends on your furler. In this collection the Harken ESP lines are 7 or 8 mm, the Facnor FD lines 8 or 10 mm, the Facnor FX loops 6 or 8 mm and the MAURIPRO loops 8 or 10 mm. Read the diameter guide and match the furler model on the product page.

How long should the furling line be?
The listings give the length for each furler model or, for the MAURIPRO loops, for each boat length: up to 25 ft with the 46 ft loop, up to 35 ft with the 66 ft loop, up to 37 ft with the 70 ft loop and up to 50 ft with the 96 ft loop.

What is a furling loop?
A closed loop of furling line. On the MAURIPRO loops the listing gives both figures: the 96 ft loop has a circumference of 48 ft.

What is the MAURIPRO furling loop made of?
Cruiser XTS Grip, a polyester double braid, in 8 mm and 10 mm.

What do I need to lead the line to the cockpit?
Fairleads and blocks on the stanchions. See Stanchion Mounts and Fairleads.
