Lewmar Low Profile Hatch — Fitting & Adjustment Instructions

Fitting Instructions

  • For deck and coachroof of yachts to ISO/DIS 12216.2(E), Design Category A, areas II, III and IV. Fitting vents or other modifications voids compliance.
  • Flat surface within ±1 mm; deck/hull at least 15 mm (5/8") thick. Fastenings clear of moulding radii; allow clearance for the lid to open.
  • Do not open and close the hatch more than necessary until the lower frame is securely mounted.
  • Mark around the outside edge of the lower frame flange (allow for trims), keep the frame square to the opening (use a template for several hatches) and cut with a suitable saw.
  • Seal exposed laminate on cored decks; deburr metal decks and insulate the aluminium frame where galvanic corrosion is possible.
  • The hatch is not a stiffening member: the deck must be stiff enough not to distort in heavy weather.
  • Bed in the lower frame channel with a marine adhesive sealant (e.g. silicone) at least 3 mm thick and compressible enough to pull the frame down onto the deck.
  • Drill two holes in opposite corners first. Stainless fasteners: M6 at the hinge, M5 everywhere else. Then drill the rest and fasten from the centre outward; clean off surplus sealant.
  • Check closing/locking and even seal pressure after installation.
Deck type Fasteners
Wood Through bolts or marine grade wood screws
GRP / steel / aluminium alloy Through bolts or machine screws into suitable tapped plates

User Notes

  • Larger hatches are not self-supporting past vertical and will fall fully open if unrestrained.
  • Locking ventilation position: close the handles into the catch block centre slot; do not stand on or load the lid in this position.
  • Wash with soap, water and a soft cloth; never abrasive or solvent cleaners on the acrylic.
  • Keep hands clear of lever and lid pinch zones.

Friction Hinge and Lever Adjustment

Hatches with Lever Stays

  • Turn the socket head screw on the side of the lever assembly with a 3 mm hexagon key, about 1/8 of a turn clockwise to increase the positioning force.
  • Do not over-tighten; on hatches with several levers, set all to a similar load.
  • Never lubricate the friction lever assemblies.

Hatches without Lever Stays

  • With the hatch open, remove the plastic hinge cover.
  • Turn the jacking nut and bolt with two small pins (e.g. hexagon keys): hold one part and rotate the other anti-clockwise to increase friction, 1/4 turn at a time.
  • Do not over-tighten; open the hatch and check after each adjustment.
