Bowsprits for Asymmetric Spinnakers and Code 0: Types, Sizes and What Each Kit Includes
A bowsprit moves the tack of an asymmetric spinnaker or Code 0 forward of the bow, so the sail sets clear of the boat. The right one comes down to four decisions — your boat length, the sail area you plan to fly, whether you want it adjustable, removable or built to fit, and how it mounts on your bow. This collection covers all four with Trogear adjustable bowsprits, Forte carbon sprit kits, Facnor Sparcraft aluminum kits and Forespar multihull sprit kits.
Bowsprit Families in This Collection
- Trogear adjustable bowsprits: AS-25 (33 in, boats up to 26 ft), AS-30R (33 in, up to 36 ft), AS-40 (50 in, up to 36 ft), AS-50 (50 in, up to 46 ft), Atlas 500 (54 in, up to 52 ft), Atlas 1000 (73 in, up to 52 ft) and Maxi (89 in, up to 70 ft). Start with the AS-30R, the AS-50 or the Atlas 1000.
- Forte carbon sprit kits: clear-painted carbon sprit with deck hardware and an outboard end fitting, in 89 mm (boats 25-32 ft), 115 mm (32-40 ft) and 140 mm (40-50 ft). The matching tubes, sold without hardware, are in the replacement tubes collection.
- Facnor Sparcraft aluminum kits: removable bowsprit in 70 mm (25-36 ft), 80 mm (36-40 ft), 90 mm (40-47 ft) and 100 mm (48-57 ft), with deck fitting blocks and two counter plates.
- Forespar multihull sprit kits: 76 mm (boats 25-35 ft), 89 mm (36-42 ft) and 101 mm (43-50 ft), made to retrofit a multihull that has no bowsprit.
- Brackets and mounts: Trogear deck, side, bow-roller and catamaran brackets — see the bowsprit brackets.
Choosing by Boat Length and Sail Area
Boat length is the first filter, sail area the second. Trogear lists a maximum asymmetric spinnaker area and a maximum Code 0 area for each model, plus a safe working load:
- AS-25: 70 m² asymmetric, 58 m² Code 0, safe working load 700 kg.
- AS-30R and AS-40: 100 m² asymmetric, 80 m² Code 0, safe working load 1,000 kg. The AS-30R extends 61 cm (24 in) past the bow, the AS-40 91.5 cm (36 in).
- AS-50: 120 m² asymmetric, 100 m² Code 0, safe working load 1,200 kg.
- Atlas 500 and Atlas 1000: 200 m² asymmetric, 160 m² Code 0, safe working load 2,000 kg. The Atlas 500 extends about 115 cm (45 in) past the bow, the Atlas 1000 155 cm (61 in).
- Maxi: 250 m² asymmetric, 200 m² Code 0, safe working load 2,500 kg, with a variable extension past the bow.
The Facnor 70 mm kit lists a maximum asymmetric spinnaker of 60 m², on a 1.6 m bowsprit (0.8 m minimum inside, 0.8 m maximum outside). Treat the boat-length bands as a starting point and confirm the exact figure on the product page. Our Trogear bowsprit selection guide walks through the choice.
Adjustable, Removable or Built to Fit
- Adjustable (Trogear): Trogear sells these as adjustable bowsprits, and the AS-25 listing notes that luff tension is adjusted from the cockpit. The Atlas 500 listing also describes it as removable.
- Removable (Facnor): the aluminum bowsprit comes off the deck fittings for storage, which leaves the foredeck clear when you are docked or moored.
- Built to fit (Forte carbon): the carbon tube is engineered to your boat's requirements. Forte recommends a 50/50 ratio of unsupported to supported length: 6 ft of pole out past the forward mount needs another 6 ft back to the aft mount, 12 ft in total. The 89 mm kit has a maximum length of 12 ft (3.7 m) and the 140 mm kit 14 ft (4.27 m).
How It Mounts
- Through-hull, deck and roller: the Trogear base model includes the parts for a through-hull installation: G10 fiberglass hinge tube, hinge shaft with bolts, and marine-grade bolts and washers. Depending on the model, Trogear also lists deck, anchor-roller, bow-roller and below-deck mounting. The Deck Mounting U Bracket Set suits the AS-25, AS-30R and AS-40, and the Bow Roller Brackets are listed for the AS-40 and AS-50.
- Narrow bows: the Trogear Side Mounting Bracket Set installs below deck on bows of about 40 degrees, including trimarans, and moves the attachment point forward for more extension.
- Catamarans: cross-beam brackets, the Bracket Set (1) for the AS-30R, AS-40 and AS-50 and the Bracket Set (2) for the Atlas and Maxi.
What a Kit Includes in Our Catalog
- Trogear base model: the through-hull parts listed above. On the AS-25 the bobstay rigging parts are not included.
- Forte carbon kit: the carbon sprit tube, deck hardware and an outboard end fitting.
- Facnor Sparcraft kit: the bowsprit with its end fittings, an adjustable central fixing collar, deck fitting blocks and two counter plates. Lines and cleats are not included, so you choose your own.
- Forespar multihull kit: the sprit pole, a UTS cross bar bracket, and an end fitting with stainless steel tangs for the stays.
Who It's For
Cruising and racing sailors adding an asymmetric spinnaker or Code 0 to an existing boat, owners of multihulls with no bowsprit, and refit projects that need to match diameter, boat length and mounting. Every unit is curated by MAURIPRO Sailing. Browse the carbon kits, aluminum kits or multihull kits, or go by brand: Trogear, Facnor and Forespar. The sail itself flies from a Code Zero furler.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size bowsprit do I need?
Start from boat length, then check the maximum sail area. Trogear gives a maximum asymmetric and Code 0 area for each model; Forte, Facnor and Forespar list boat-length bands for each diameter. Confirm on the product page. The selection guide compares the Trogear models.
Do I need a bowsprit for a Code 0?
A Code 0 needs its tack out ahead of the bow, and a bowsprit provides that point. The Trogear listings state Code 0 compatibility and give a maximum Code 0 area for each model.
Should I choose an adjustable, removable or carbon kit?
Trogear gives you an adjustable bowsprit by model and boat size. Facnor aluminum is removable, so it clears the foredeck when you are not using it. Forte carbon is built to your boat's requirements, with a 50/50 supported-to-unsupported length.
Does the bowsprit come with its mounting hardware?
It depends on the brand. Trogear base models include through-hull hinge parts and bolts; Forte and Facnor kits include deck hardware and fittings; Forespar includes a cross bar bracket, end fitting and tangs. Bobstay rigging, lines and cleats are listed as not included where noted, so read the product page.
Is there a bowsprit for a catamaran or a trimaran?
Yes. The Forespar multihull kits retrofit a multihull without a bowsprit (boats 25 to 50 ft), and Trogear lists catamaran bracket sets and a side mounting bracket set for narrow bows including trimarans.
