Rope sizes apply to rope and chain spliced with the Quick system; Quick does not guarantee operation with other anchor-rode types. The rope-to-chain splice must be tight so the rope slides easily into the gypsy.

In the Box & Tools

  • Windlass (top + gearmotor); reversing contactor box (DP1/DP2 300-500W) or contactor box (DP2/DP3 700-1000W); base gasket; lever; top/gearmotor assembly screws; manual, warranty and drilling template.
  • DP1: drill Ø 9 mm (23/64") and Ø 11 mm (7/16"); hole saws Ø 46 mm (1" 13/16) and Ø 62 mm (2" 7/16); 13 mm wrench.
  • DP2: drill Ø 9 mm and Ø 11 mm; hole saws Ø 51 mm (2") and Ø 64 mm (2" 1/2); 13 mm wrench.
  • DP3: drill Ø 9 mm and Ø 16 mm (5/8"); hole saws Ø 65 mm (2"9/16) and Ø 67 mm (2"5/8); 13 mm wrench.

Requirements & Fitting

  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller; a positive chain tilt up to 10° at the roller is allowed, an excessive negative tilt fouls the windlass base.
  • Chain to deck: positive tilt up to 5°. Keep the deck faces parallel (compensate if not) or the motor loses power; deck thickness must be within the table.
  • Nothing must obstruct cables, rope and chain below deck; a shallow peak causes chain jams (the drawing shows 40 cm (16") of drop).
  • Drill with the template, clean and seal the chain hole (marine paint, epoxy resin or gel), fit the gasket, join top and gearbox, tighten the stud nuts (8÷10 Nm in the drawing) and wire to the contactor unit.
  • 700/1000 W: the gearbox flange fits either side (mode 1 / mode 2, flange screws 3÷4,5 Nm); motorgearbox can be rotated every 45° relative to the base.

Wiring

  • DP1 / DP2 P 300-500 W: reversing contactor box T6415-12 (12V) / T6415-24 (24V).
  • DP2 P 700-1000 W and DP3 1500 W: contactor box T6315-12 (12V) / T6315-24 (24V).
  • Control circuit fuse 4A (12V) / 2A (24V); hydraulic-magnetic breaker WCB sized from the data table.
  • Total cable length L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4 (+ L5 on the 300-500 W layout) – use it to size the motor cable.
  • Controls shown: WCS 820 / WCS B / WCS 830 control-board switches, HRC 1002 push-button panel, 900U/900D foot switches, CHC 1103 / CHC 1203 / QNC CHC chain counters, RRC R02 receiver with P02 / H02 transmitters.

Cautions, Use & Troubleshooting

  • Quick windlasses are designed to weigh the anchor only, not to hold loads from storm conditions. Always deactivate the windlass when not in use and check for swimmers before dropping anchor.
  • Fit at least two controls in case one is damaged; use a Quick hydraulic-magnetic (or thermal-magnetic) delayed-action DC breaker as motor protection – it also isolates the control circuit.
  • Mount the (reversing) contactor box where it is protected from water.
  • Once anchored, take the chain onto a chain stopper or bollard; the windlass must never be the only securing device. Isolate it during navigation and secure the chain or rope to a fixed point.
  • Make sure the motor cannot be powered when working the windlass by hand: a remote control (handheld or radio) could start it. Never run it electrically with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover.

Clutch

The clutch cones link the gypsy to the main shaft. Insert the handle in the drum bush or gypsy cover and turn it counter-clockwise to release the clutch; clockwise to re-engage it.

Weighing & Casting

  • Weighing: start the engine, check the clutch is engaged, remove the handle and press UP. Watch the last few metres of chain to avoid damaging the bow.
  • Casting by hand: release the clutch and let the gypsy run; turn the handle counter-clockwise to slow the chain.
  • Casting electrically: press DOWN for a controlled, even release.
  • Once anchored, take the load off the windlass: fasten the chain or secure it to a strong point with a rope.

Troubleshooting

  • Windlass stops but the breaker has not tripped: wait a few seconds and try again – do not keep the button pressed.
  • Breaker tripped: reset it and wait a few minutes before weighing again.
  • Still blocked after several attempts: move the boat to free the anchor.

Maintenance

  • Switch off the motor supply before working on the windlass by hand; take the chain off the gypsy or the rope off the drum.
  • Rinse salt deposits off with fresh water regularly.
  • Once a year – drum version: loosen the bush (2) with the handle (1), pull off the drum (3), remove the top clutch cone (9), open the chain guide cover (16), undo screws (20) to remove the chain stripper (21), remove the gypsy (10) and bottom cone (9).
  • No-drum version: remove the gypsy cover (6) with the handle, then as above.
  • Clean everything, grease the shaft thread and the gypsy cone seats with marine grease; clean and grease the motor and contactor terminals.
  • Gearmotor work by qualified personnel only, and only when it is cold. (Item numbers refer to the DP1 drawing.)
