Technical Specification

This manual covers the electric drive unit only; the furler itself is installed per its own manual (204S/304S, 204TD/304TD, 200S/300S or 200TD/300TD). The drive fits current 204S/304S/204TD/304TD and the 1997–2015 200S/300S/200TD/300TD, and runs only with the Selden power supply and SEL-Bus system (42V).

  • Self-locking worm gear (40:1) in both directions, so the sail can be furled from either side.
  • Two speeds: one button = low speed; press both buttons = high speed.
  • Emergency: ½" socket on the starboard side for the supplied emergency line driver.
  • Torque is limited by the motor controller, programmed per Furlex size.

Above Deck (204E/304E)

  • Above-deck Furlex Electric uses a reinforced torque toggle; use only the Furlex Electric torque toggle and optional extension link. The forestay attachment must handle the torque load.
  • Slide the swivel over the terminal, fit adaptor halves and luff extrusion, then fit the motor unit over the hub so the bronze gear engages the carriers. The motor unit can be turned 90° to suit the forestay fitting.
  • Deck gland: drill Ø20–30 mm, seal and screw down; protective hose with hose clamps (do not over-tighten); hose and cables must not stretch when the unit swings.
  • Connection box as high as possible in the anchor box, cables looped so water runs away from it.

Through Deck (TDE) & Retrofits

  • TDE: a torque stay from the bracket on the housing to the side of the hull is essential – without it the forestay fitting may break. Bond the bracket to the hull (port side, perpendicular to the drive unit) with structural adhesive; drill Ø6.5 mm for the clevis pin, leaving ≥10 mm material.
  • Max. working load on torque bracket: 204TDE 2100N, 304TDE 3600N; 200TDE 2000N, 300TDE 3600N.
  • Tack ring to deck fitting approx. 5 mm at the front with the tack-ring eye pulled up.
  • TD: drill a Ø8 mm drain hole at the lowest point of the hose.
  • 204S/304S and 204TD/304TD retrofit: remove circlip, washer, balls and bearing ring, lift the line drum off without lifting the top main bearing, fit the new hub, and if axial play exceeds 0.5 mm fit shim 164-543 (204TDE: 164-540). Never re-use the circlip (a new one is in the kit).
  • 200S/300S and 200TD/300TD retrofit: fit the two carriers (marked "UP"); on TD remove the grub screws (heat may be needed) and refit with locking adhesive. On 204TD/304TD the holder may need approx. 3x45° chamfers filed on the fork.
  • Wiring: connect to the MCU terminals L1, L2, L3 for standard anti-clockwise furling; swap orange to L2 and brown to L1 for the opposite direction.

Operation & Emergency Furling

  • Unfurl: release the windward sheet, one turn of the leeward sheet on a winch, push OUT and tension the sheet gradually; return to low speed just before fully out. Close hauled gives the best angle.
  • Furl: free the windward sheet, keep light tension on the leeward sheet and push the button. Never use Furlex Electric for sheeting.
  • Emergency: switch power off, insert the line driver in the ½" socket and turn the knob clockwise, then pull the endless line (or use a crank). Remove the driver before switching power back on – it will spin rapidly.
  • Never leave the boat unattended with the system energized; never alter overcurrent protection ratings.

Troubleshooting

Service & Maintenance

  • Frequently: rinse with fresh water (including a TDE in the anchor box) and check the anchor-box drainage.
  • Yearly: check the lower unit turns freely (use the emergency handle to check the worm gear), remove covers and look for oil/grease leaks, lubricate bearings with water-resistant Furlex grease, inspect hose, clamps, connection box and cables.
  • Every 5th year at most: motor-unit service by an authorized Selden dealer (cleaning, seals, re-greasing); more often for charter or long-distance use.
