Selden Furlex 204TD & 304TD — Owner's Manual

Main Dimensions (mm)

Drum below deck, tack at deck level. Lower terminal options: Sta-Lok eye (standard), Sta-Lok rigging screw (stroke 60 mm on 204TD, 80 mm on 304TD, integrated in the torque tube) or swaged stud. Wire stays are 1x19; options 2 and 3 also suit rod and compact (Dyform) wire – rod stays need supplement 597-180-E. For genoas with large LP, the S-series line drum and line guide can be used if the TD drum takes too little line (needs more room below deck).

  • C is nominal: deck thickness there should not exceed 17 mm (204TD) / 25 mm (304TD); thicker decks need a cavity to clear the top forward drum edge. Seal sandwich cores.
  • D is fine-tuned with the adjustable fork terminal; for larger gaps use a custom stainless bar or rod stay (short wire pendants not recommended). Pin "E" must be fixed in all directions.
  • Forestay-to-deck angle between 70,5° and 75,5°; otherwise fit spacers under the deck fitting.
  • Deck hole: hole saw Ø108 (204TD) / Ø127 (304TD), screw holes Ø6,5; 1:1 template included.

Luff extrusion overall 35x25 (1 3/8" x 63/64") 42x31 (1 21/32" x 1 17/32")
  • Max. luff length = FLD – (F + E).
  • Halyard-to-forestay angle 10–15°, never less than 10° (section 6.1 of the manual says 5–10°, as printed); at least 50 mm between halyard swivel and top guard.
  • Webbing loops at head and tack; HMPE or wire pendant at the head if the sail is short.

Forestay Wire & Luff Extrusion Length

FLD = FL + CH (chainplate hole to deck, along the forestay); NFL = FLD – TDH (204TD: 125mm, 304TD: 145mm); WL = NFL – T.

  • N = (WL – (A+B)) / 2400, rounded down; C = N × 2400; top extrusion D = WL – (A+B) – C; top distance tube E = D – X (204TD: 200mm, 304TD: 250mm).
  • Example (304TD 10mm, rigging screw 50% extended): FL 16070 + CH 40 = FLD 16110; – 145 = 15965; – T 150 = WL 15815; (15815 – 1025) / 2400 = 6.16 → N = 6; C = 14400; D = 390; E = 140.
  • If D is under 400 mm: N new = N – 1, C new = N new × 2400 + 2000, D new = D + 400, E new = E + 400 (example: 14000 / 790 / 540). If D exceeds 2000 mm, cut the top from a 2400 mm extrusion.
  • Foil: 730 mm (204TD) / 700 mm (304TD) bottom extrusion, 2400 mm extrusions and a 2000 mm top. Short joining sleeves 204TD 200mm / 304TD 250mm; long sleeve 260mm / 325mm. Assemble on the stay from the top down; bottom distance tube in about 50 mm (2"), bearing halves secured with the spring pin.
  • Torque tube alignment mark on the luff section: 204TD 45mm, 304TD 52mm. Sta-Lok: wire core protrudes approx. 2 mm; compact wire needs the compact wedge supplied with the compact wire pack.

Deck Hole & Lower Bearing

  1. Find the forestay intersection point on deck (rig drawing and cardboard angle jig, or step the mast with a forestay through a small hole) and drill a 6.5 mm hole.
  2. Cut a 50 mm hole centred on it, use the genoa halyard through the hole as forestay (D shackle, never a snap shackle) and mark it longitudinally and laterally.
  3. Fit plywood underneath, tape the hole jig to the marks, cut the large hole and drill the screw holes. The deck collar must rest against the aft edge of the hole; an extra screw at B if the deck is thick enough.
  4. Set the fork terminal so X = deck collar to chain plate hole + ~10 mm, nut backed off ~15 mm. Attach to the chain plate and turn the toggle until the tack ring is about 4–5 mm above the deck collar and clears it all round.
  5. Manual systems: unscrew the fork at least 5 counted turns, apply locking adhesive, screw back and lock the nut firmly (permanent). Electric systems: do not tighten the nut.
  6. Fit the furling line (two screws, first about 25 mm from the rope end; do not overtighten), the four brims and the line cover; wind approx. 24 turns.

Rigging & Furling Line

  • Fit the torque tube to the lower bearing assembly (marks aligned, bushings with locking adhesive, tighten hard), then the luff section screws with adhesive.
  • Tension the forestay to 20% of the wire's breaking load (masthead: approx. 15% of the backstay breaking load; forestay ≈ 1.25 × backstay tension).
  • Line enters the drum perpendicular to the forestay with at least 300 mm to the first turning point. Below-deck turning block, deck sheave house and cockpit block: safe working load at least 300kg (204TD) / 500kg (304TD).
  • Stanchion blocks: 204TD four articulating blocks for Ø25 mm (1"); 304TD one articulating (pulpit) plus four fixed for Ø25 mm, or Ø30 mm (1 1/4") with M6-25 mm screws.
  • Rigging screw: unload the luff, remove the bushing, slide the torque tube and locking tube up and turn only the bronze body. The flats must align for the locking tube to drop back. Do not force the end stop.
  • Split pins opened ~20°.

Inspection, Service & Storage

  • Yearly: check the foil, that everything turns freely and bearings are greased; grease all four ball bearings in the lower bearing assembly (upper and lower main bearings, tack ring bearings) and both halyard swivel bearings with water-resistant grease.
  • Halyard leads: inspect yearly, replace at 50% wear.
  • Wash with fresh water and mild detergent, rinse well; silicone-free polish or wax on the extrusions. Store with the mast, aluminium away from steel, never damp in plastic; in frost areas store dry or with centre extrusions raised.
  • Never dismantle the halyard swivel or drum unit. Re-making a Sta-Lok: heat the threads, at least 10 mm of free wire above the socket in the vice, cut strands about 5 mm, use a new wedge.

Troubleshooting

Problem Probable cause Action
Sail will not unfurl, or only partly Halyard wrapped round the foil; furling line jammed; forestay too slack; dirt/salt in bearings; too much halyard tension Ease halyard and reverse; free the line; tension backstay or shorten the Furlex; rinse and grease; ease halyard
Sail hard to furl No line on drum; windward sheet not released; free turn not working; large turning angles; line tangled on drum; line guide chafing; swivel upside down Wind more line; release sheet; re-set the tack ring; re-route; rewind; adjust; fit swivel correctly
System wobbles Forestay too loose Tension backstay and/or cap shrouds
Sail unfurls after furling Furled too loosely; line not belayed Furl with some drag; belay the line
Sail hard to hoist Luff tape too thick; sail caught; halyard routing; dirt in groove Sailmaker; arrange the sail; check sheaves; clean the groove
Luff cannot be tensioned Swivel touches top guard; halyard angle too great Shorten the sail or move the halyard lead up
Sail cannot be taken down Halyard wrapped or stuck Ease and reverse; keep slight drag while lowering; check routing
UV strip inside the roll Line wound the wrong way Empty the drum and rewind the right way
Sail wrinkled at the tack Tack ring turned the wrong way before tacking the sail Rotate the tack ring round the system and re-tack
