How to Choose a Lewmar Hatch or Portlight

Pick the family

  • Flush Hatch / Flush Hatch 3G: acrylic sits flush with the deck, drained by deck-moulded channels. Sizes 10 to 70.
  • Low Profile: smaller sizes suit any deck location on a sailboat; larger sizes work as foredeck hatches on small to mid size yachts. Square, D-hatch and round versions.
  • Medium Profile: thicker acrylic and deeper frame sections; the foredeck hatch for larger offshore yachts. Sizes 30 to 77.
  • Ocean: classic rugged hatch, Flat Base or Flange (25 mm / 1" flange) lower frame.
  • Pilot: sliding hatch for wheelhouses and cockpit canopies of power craft only; not for normal decks or coachroofs.
  • Portlights: Flush Mitre, Stainless Steel, Round Stainless, Standard and Atlantic.

Read the tables like this

  • Size is the Lewmar size number; the same number gives the same cut-out across most hatch families.
  • X, Y, Z, R are the overall dimensions and corner radius; X1, Y1, R1 are the deck cut-out you saw.
  • Cut-out dimensions change if a trim kit is used: add 4 mm to X1 and Y1 and 2 mm to R1.
  • Sizes marked * are the minimum size for ISO 9094 escape hatches.
  • Hatches and portlights must be fitted to a flat surface, maximum tolerance ±1 mm.
  • Check hull thickness against the portlight limits before ordering.

Flush Hatch

  • White lower frame, black exterior moulding, grey interior moulding; acrylic Grey or Dark Grey.
  • Size 20 and 41 supplied with friction lever; other sizes use 1 or 2 stays.
  • EPDM seal; trim kit fits all standard sizes; custom sizes and stainless steel hatch furniture available.
  • Fastenings: lower frame 5 mm CSK screws No. 10 UNC 2BA; hinge section M6 (1/4").

All sizes: lower frame flange (W) 15 mm (9/16"), hinge gap (W) 11 mm (11/64", as printed), depth (Z) 31 mm (1 1/4"), corner radius (R) 10 mm (3/8"), cut-out radius (R1) 42.5 mm (1 11/16").

Flush Hatch 3G

  • Lower-frame mounted EPDM seal; extruded aluminium frame hidden below deck; built-in locking.
  • Interchangeable with the 2G Flush Hatch: same overall and cut-out dimensions as the table above.
  • Size 10, 20 and 41 come with friction hinges and plain flush exterior handle caps; 30, 44, 54, 60 and 70 with 1 or 2 stays and winch-handle opening handles.
  • Exterior handle available for foredeck use. For ISO 9094 use the hatch must have the external handle option.

Winch handle opening does not meet the requirements of Designated Fire Exits in the draft of the new ISO 9094.

Low Profile Hatch

  • Opens up to 180° (round hatches to 170°); friction levers hold the lid at any position up to 95°.
  • Outside handles open the hatch from on deck when not locked. Anodised aluminium frame.
  • Telescopic stay option opens the lid to around 90°, handy where deck space is tight.
  • Acrylic or seal is replaced by sliding the two halves of the frame apart.

Pilot Hatch

  • For wheelhouses and cockpit canopies of power craft only; cannot be operated from outside.
  • Single rotating handlebar seals it down; can be secured with a 5 cm opening for partial ventilation.
  • Sliding track system; acrylic replaceable without sealant.
  • Fastenings for lower frame and sliding track: 5 mm CSK screws No. 10 UNC 2BA.
