Choosing a Thruster

  • Position matters as much as thrust: the turbine needs one full propeller diameter below the waterline (ideal immersion depth = 1 x tunnel diameter), and the unit should sit as far forward in the bow (or as far aft in the stern) as possible. A unit further from the bow needs more power for the same turning effect.
  • Tunnel thrusters are the solution for motor yachts and deep-keeled sailing yachts when sailing performance is not paramount.
  • Retractable thrusters install far forward in the bow while still reaching the required immersion; they often allow a lower thrust rating than the tunnel equivalent, and when retracted they add no drag. They are mostly suited to modern sailing yachts.
  • Power source: 12/24 VDC electric motor or a hydraulic motor (driven from an engine via a hydraulic pump, or from a remote DC power pack). Bow and stern thrusters together allow turning on the spot or moving the yacht sideways.
  • Boat type columns: heavy displacement / high windage & cruising; medium displacement / medium windage & fast cruising; light displacement / light windage & super fast cruising.

Thrusters are designed to run at 10,75 V on 12 V units, 22 V on 24 V units or 45,6 V on 48 V units; higher voltages give more thrust, more consumption and a reduced duty cycle. Performance is for an immersion depth of one tunnel diameter in a tunnel no longer than twice its diameter (+/- 6%). CT 300 and CT 325 are delivered complete with control system. Bundles (thruster, joystick simple 318202, ANL fuse and fuse holder 636347) exist for CT 25 to CT 125 – see page 10. CT 550 AC (600138, 380 - 440 V 3ph 50 Hz, 450 / 992 kgf/lbs) is on page 11.
