Selecting a Windlass

Maxwell windlass and capstan selection chart by chain size and boat length, light and heavy displacement

Basic guide only: heavy displacement or high windage boats need larger windlasses. All systems assume a chain stopper, snubber or cleat takes the load when setting or breaking out the anchor. For a stern capstan on the same boat Maxwell uses one size smaller drive, or down to 50% of the windlass pull rating.

Sizing the Pull

  1. Add up the ground tackle: anchor + chain + rope. Catalogue example: 30 kg/66 lbs anchor + 45 kg/100 lbs of chain (18 m/60 ft) + 12 kg/26 lbs of rope (61 m/200 ft) = 87 kg/192 lbs.
  2. Multiply by 3 for the maximum pull: 87 kg/192 lbs × 3 = 261 kg/576 lbs. The windlass pull should never be less than 3 times the ground tackle weight.
  3. In that example an HRC8, HRC10, RC8, RC10 or VW1000 would suit, provided the chain and rope sizes fit. If in doubt, go one size up.
  • Working load is about one third of maximum pull: the load once the anchor is off the bottom.
  • Vertical windlasses give 180° wrap of the rode on the chainwheel; horizontal ones 90°, sit fully above deck and suit decks over 200 mm (8"), limited below-deck access or two anchors on one winch.
  • Automatic rope/chain systems (HRCFF, HRC10, RC6, RC8, RC10, RC12) are common on boats up to 22 metres (75 feet); use high test or calibrated short link chain, never long link.
  • Rode alignment with the bow roller: within about +/- 2% for vertical systems; more critical on RC series (see the owner's manual).
