Size and Standard

  • Size and standard must both match: DIN 766, ISO 4565, US BBB and High Test chain of the same nominal size have different link pitch, and a gypsy is cut for one standard only.
  • Check the stamp on your chain or gypsy, or measure a few links, before you order.
  • Use calibrated chain only: ordinary galvanised chain is not calibrated, so its links will not seat in a gypsy and can jump under load.

Sizing Up and Scope

  • Go up a size for heavy or high-windage boats or a boat at the top of its length band, for charter, commercial or extended offshore use, or if you plan to carry more chain or a heavier anchor later.
  • Scope rule of thumb: at least 5:1 for all-chain rode, about 7:1 for rope and chain (scope = rode let out ÷ depth plus bow-roller height). Allow more in strong wind or poor holding.
  • Guide only: confirm the selection with Muir or a Muir dealer. Weights are for DIN 766 calibrated chain.
