Selden Keelboat Product Catalogue

What the Catalogue Covers

Selden rig systems and accessories for keelboats (595-950-E, Version 1). Selden defines a keelboat as a boat between a dinghy and a yacht, approximately 18-28', often with a 50% ballast ratio. Every Selden mast and boom has a serial number engraved at the lower end of the mast and the front end of the boom (e.g. D14-C126-0584 = a C126 section): quote it when ordering parts. Page numbers are as printed.

Choosing a Boom

You need the sail foot length (E) and the righting moment (RM) at 30° heel; if the RM is not known, displacement is an alternative. Emax, Ymax and S are measured as shown in the drawing on page 41; the S measurement is also needed when boom length is set by other factors than E. Values in metres.

When fitting a Selden boom to a mast of another brand, check the existing toggle dimensions for compatibility (B087/B104: A 8, B 8, C 16 mm; B120: A 14, B 10, C 20 mm). Boom brackets by mast section are on pages 46–47.

Rodkicker and Kicking Strap

The Rodkicker choice is based mainly on the righting moment and the rig type (masthead or fractional). The gas spring strength depends on boom weight (including the stowed sail) and the Rodkicker angle; the gas spring table by boom height (XBH) and foot length is on page 51.

Kicking strap tackle is not included with the Rodkicker. The Rodkicker doubles the purchase of your kicking strap: a 4:1 tackle gives 8:1 in total.

Selecting the Right Pole

Find your displacement or righting moment (RM) at 30° heel, then read right for the first value exceeding your SPL (maximum spinnaker pole length, often but not always equal to J). Example from the catalogue: displacement 2.8 tonnes, SPL 3000 mm → S060. A whisker pole should be approximately as long as the foot of the sail you intend to pole out.
