Selden Sailmaker's Guide

Information the Sailmaker Needs

The guide covers the major part of Selden production from 1977 onwards (and generally applies to Kemp products of the same period). It is an aid only; it is the sailmaker's responsibility to make sure the sail suits the rig.

Sail Give the sailmaker
Conventional mainsail (short or full length battens) Mast section dimensions, boom section dimensions, sail plan ("P" & "E").
Furling mast mainsail Mast section dimensions, boom section dimensions, reefing system type (Selden furling, Furlex-Main, etc.).
Roller furling genoa Furlex type, total forestay length incl. all toggles or available sail space, sail plan.
Mast type Years
D and E sections: conventional masts 1977 - 2002
R sections: furling masts 1989 - 2002
C sections: conventional masts 2003 & 2017
F sections: furling masts 2003 & 2017

Carbon spars supplement (595-545-E)

Additional information for carbon yacht and keelboat masts and booms, covering carbon/carbon and carbon/aluminium combinations (not spinnaker poles or bowsprits): carbon mast sections and section properties, sail tracks, deflection curves, boltrope luff and RCB22 track and cars, keelboat slides, carbon boom sections, mast/boom combinations (aluminium and Match slab-reef and SLR booms on carbon masts, carbon booms on carbon and aluminium masts), clew attachments and mastheads.

  • On carbon masts all sail foot "E" dimensions are measured from the aft edge of the external sail track.
  • Sail entry, tack and reefline dimensions are for Selden track only; detailed tack dimensions are measured from the mast section rear face, not the track.
  • Aluminium boom dimensions on carbon masts assume the 2008-onwards range.

Sails with a luff considerably shorter (more than 500 mm) than the maximum permissible must have a permanent head pendant; total luff length including pendant should be just less than the max sail space. Too short a luff can cause halyard wrap, which can damage the forestay and put the rig at risk. If F is larger than specified (sail too short), the halyard shackle can chafe the luff extrusion: check clearance and add a pendant or a soft shackle.
