What's the Difference Between a Vertical and a Horizontal Windlass?
A vertical windlass mounts its motor and gearbox below deck, with only the gypsy (the chain/rope wheel) and drum showing above deck — the rode enters the gypsy from the side and drops straight down into the anchor locker beneath it. A horizontal windlass mounts the entire unit — motor, gearbox, gypsy, and drum — on top of the deck, with the rode running in and back out at roughly deck level before it falls into the locker. Why Does Anchor Locker Depth Matter for Your Windlass Choice?
