What does it mean to sail close-hauled?

Close-hauled is the point of sail that brings a boat as directly toward the wind as it can efficiently go. For most boats that course is about 45 degrees to the true-wind direction, though it varies with hull design, sail shape and condition, and wind strength. It is the happy confluence of speed and course: sail any higher (closer to the wind) and the sails lose power and the boat slows; foot off lower and you go faster but make less progress toward an upwind destination.

To find it, start on a beam reach and head up about 45 degrees while trimming the jib sheet in tightly (but not rock-hard). Trim the mainsail until its luff just stops bubbling; the boom will sit a little off centerline. Close-hauled is also the liveliest point of sail — the apparent wind feels strongest, the boat heels more than on any other heading, and a little spray on deck adds to the fun.

How do you steer and trim when sailing upwind?

Steering matters most when close-hauled, because with the sails pulled in tight there is nothing left to trim — the driver must constantly adjust course to wind shifts. Telltales, short dark yarns or nylon strips streaming on the jib a foot or two behind the luff, are an excellent steering aid. Except in very light air, the helmsman should sit on the windward side for visibility and control.

Steer too close to the wind and you are pinching: the jib begins to luff at its leading edge, warning you that you have entered the no-sail zone. Steer just slightly low and the sails look full but you have lost your best speed to windward. Getting "in the groove" means steering as close to the wind as possible without that small luff at the front of the jib.

Why does a boat need to tack to go upwind?

A sailboat cannot make forward progress directly into the wind — point too high and the sails simply flap and you lose headway. To reach a destination directly upwind you sail a zigzag course, each leg roughly 45 degrees off the direct line, like climbing a mountain on switchbacks. Tacking is the maneuver that turns the bow entirely through the no-sail zone to get from your "zig" course to your "zag" course on the other side.

When the wind blows on the starboard side, the boat is on starboard tack; on the port side, port tack. Reaching an upwind point means sailing close-hauled part of the way on starboard tack and part on port tack, tacking through the wind between them. (The term "coming about" also means tacking.) The word itself is old: on a square-rigged ship, the lower forward corner of the sail hauled down when close-hauled was the "tack," and changing sides literally meant changing tacks.
