Why does your hardware decide diameter, not your boat length?

Start with what the line actually has to pass through, not a length-based rule of thumb. How much smaller can Dyneema go than a polyester double braid for the same load?

Considerably smaller. Our own sizing guide for Premium Ropes' Cruiser XTS polyester double-braid lines shows an 8 mm Cruiser XTS Solid rated at 1,810 kg / 3,990 lb and a 10 mm Cruiser XTS Solid at 2,660 kg / 5,860 lb. An 8 mm DX Core 78 Dyneema single braid is rated at 5,300 kg / 11,680 lb -- roughly three times the breaking strength of a polyester line the same diameter, and a 10 mm DX Core 78 (8,800 kg / 19,400 lb) clears even the 10 mm polyester figure by more than 3x.

That's the trade cruisers make when they move a sheet or halyard tail from double-braid polyester to single-braid Dyneema: real diameter and weight savings for the same working load, at the cost of the grip and hand-friendliness a polyester (or Dyneema-cored, polyester-covered) construction offers.

When does SK99's extra strength let you downsize diameter further?

Only when you actually need the diameter or weight savings for a specific reason -- a performance rig cutting weight aloft, or a running backstay/lashing where every extra millimeter matters. Does the heat-set (HPS) version change what diameter you need?

Not directly -- HPS is about stability, not strength margin. "HPS" means the braid is heat-set and prestretched during manufacturing, pulling out more of the fiber's initial construction stretch before it reaches your boat. Check the specific diameter's own published rating rather than assuming HPS and standard SK78 scale identically -- MAURIPRO's live catalog lists each diameter's rating separately.

Choose HPS at the same diameter you'd otherwise pick when the line stays under sustained tension for long periods -- a halyard left hoisted at anchor, or a lashing you don't want to keep re-tensioning as it works out factory stretch over the first few weeks.

What if you need a larger diameter, or don't need Dyneema-brand fiber specifically?

We size Dyneema lashings and soft shackles to the pin or bail they pass through, not the breaking-strength chart alone. A 4 mm DX Core 78 lashing is plenty strong for most cruising applications, but if it passes twice through a tight shackle bail, the next size up seats and wears better even with strength margin to spare.

We confirm fit through the actual clutch or block before ordering a full spool. A short test length saves a return on the wrong diameter.
