What should I look for when buying sailboat lines?

Premium Ropes Cruiser XTS Solid - 10 mm (3/8 in) Polyester Double Braid

Sailboat lines and rigging fall into two families: standing rigging (the fixed wires that hold the mast up) and running rigging (the movable ropes that raise, trim, and shape the sails). Harken Furling Line Double-Braid — marine-grade polyester in both core and cover, engineered for consistent diameter under load and reliable grip. The best halyard line depends on how you sail: polyester double braid for budget cruising, a Dyneema/polyester blend for cruising and performance-cruising, and a Dyneema-core line for racing. MAURIPRO Sailing stocks Premium Ropes sailboat lines options, listed in Sailboat lines ropes cruising.

What do sailboat lines actually do?

A halyard is the line that hoists a sail up the mast. A furling line is the direct mechanical link between you and your roller furling system, enabling precise control over headsail deployment and retrieval. Furling lines are the dedicated control line that turns your roller furler drum, deploying and retrieving your headsail from the cockpit. These are the lines you handle every time you sail: Halyards: raise and lower the sails (main halyard, jib halyard, spinnaker halyard).

What build details matter on sailboat lines?

Our default racing setup is to taper (remove the cover) for almost the full height of the mast with the sail up, leaving roughly 4 to 5 feet of cover on the upper end to protect the line where it runs over the sheave. Regular inspection keeps your rig safe and extends the life of every line: Inspect standing rigging for corrosion, cracks, or broken strands at the terminals.

What else decides the choice?

Because it runs the full height of the rig and carries luff tension, the line you choose directly affects sail shape, weight aloft, and how often you re-tension during the day. Every furling drum is engineered to accept a specific range of line diameters, and operating outside it creates problems. Choosing a lower-stretch fiber lets you reverse that trade and drop back to a smaller, lighter line. The consequences of the wrong line go well beyond inconvenience.

Which should you choose?

Frequently asked questions

What should you check first when buying sailboat lines?

Dyneema/polyester blends are our pick for cruising, performance cruising, and even entry-level racing: the weight-to-strength ratio is a clear upgrade over traditional polyester, saving weight and allowing a reduction in line size.

What size sailboat lines fits your boat?

A rope clutch is engineered around a diameter range — line too large jams, too small slips.

What are sailboat lines made of?

Dyneema-core lines are the way to go for racing halyards.

What load can sailboat lines take?

For cruisers, decades of stretch-prone polyester meant bumping up line diameter to compensate—adding weight up the mast and forcing the use of larger clutches.
