What does chafe look like, and when does it mean retire the line?
Chafe (abrasion) is fiber wear or breakage from contact with a rough or sharp surface — external, where the line rubs a fairlead, block, sheave, or cleat edge, or internal, where the yarns inside the rope move against each other. Light, even fuzzing on a newer line is often normal running-in wear, not damage.
The rigging shop Puget Sound Rigging documented the difference from real field inspections: one halyard showed minor chafe on all sides along its entire length — a sign of UV-weakened fiber that let ordinary friction start cutting the cover everywhere at once — while a second halyard chafed on only one side, tracing straight back to a chipped, sharp-edged sheave in the exit box. Replacing the line without also replacing the damaged sheave would have just repeated the failure on the new line.

That matters because the cover isn't just protection. In a standard double-braid line, Puget Sound Rigging notes the cover typically carries roughly a third of the rope's total working load alongside the core — so once chafe has cut through to visible core fiber, Samson Rope's inspection guidance is unambiguous: remove the affected section and re-splice if you can, or retire the line if you can't.
What is glazing, and why is it always a retire-now sign?
Glazing is heat damage, not ordinary wear. Samson Rope's inspection criteria describe it as fused fibers — visibly charred or melted yarns and strands, with an extreme stiffness that doesn't loosen when you flex the rope. Their guidance: re-splice the section out if possible, otherwise retire the line.
Don't confuse it with compression, a related but different finding on the same inspection chart: a shiny, temporarily stiffened section — common on the part of a line that regularly loads over a winch drum — that flexes back to normal and simply needs working out by hand. Glazing stays stiff after flexing; compression doesn't.

Glazing's root cause is friction heat, and New England Ropes' line-care guidance points at the fix upstream of the symptom: size your sheaves to roughly 8–9 times the rope's diameter. An undersized sheave concentrates load and friction into a smaller contact patch, generating the heat that glazes the cover — replacing the line without checking the sheave that caused it just buys you a shorter second life.
How do I tell if the core is damaged when I can't see it?
Core damage is the hardest failure mode to catch because it often shows no cover damage at all. Samson Rope's inspection chart lists two tell-tale signs you can find with your hands: inconsistent diameter — flat areas, lumps, or bumps usually caused by shock loading or broken internal strands — and a pulled strand, where a single strand has worked loose from the rest of the rope without being cut.

How many cut strands mean it's time to retire a line?
Samson Rope's published threshold: on a 12-strand single braid, two or more cut strands close together call for a re-splice of that section, or retirement if a re-splice isn't possible; on an 8-strand or 3-strand rope, a single cut strand triggers the same response. That threshold matters most on single-braid Dyneema halyards — common on performance-cruising and race-tier halyard cores — where each strand shares the load individually.

From our rigging bench: the single most common mistake we see isn't missing an obvious cut or a melted patch — it's re-splicing around a symptom and never touching the hardware that caused it. A new tail on a line that's still running through the same chipped sheave or undersized clutch just resets the clock on the same failure.
Should I re-splice a section, or replace the whole line?
For a 30–45 ft cruiser doing an annual check, use the location and spread of the damage to decide: localized damage near one end — chafe at a shackle eye, a couple of cut strands within reach of a re-splice — can usually be cut back and re-spliced if there's enough spare length, per Samson's own corrective-action guidance.
Damage spread along the working length — a UV-faded or stiff cover over multiple meters, chafe recurring at more than one point, or glazing found more than once — calls for full replacement. A re-splice there only removes the symptom, not the UV or heat exposure still degrading the rest of the line. Any core exposure, a strand-cut count over Samson's threshold, or fiber charred or melted anywhere means retire the whole line immediately, regardless of remaining length.
Common mistakes when judging running rigging wear
- Judging a line by feel at one spot only. Wear concentrates at sheaves, clutches, and turning points — run the full working length through your hand, not just the section you can see from the cockpit.
- Mistaking compression sheen for glazing, or the reverse. Flex-test any shiny or stiff patch first — true glazing stays stiff; compression flexes back out.
- Re-splicing around the symptom without fixing the cause. A chipped sheave, an undersized clutch, or an exposed cotter pin will chafe or glaze the next line exactly the same way.
- Assuming no visible fraying means the line is fine. UV degradation and core damage often show up as stiffness or a diameter change with no cover damage at all.

How often should I inspect my running rigging?
At least once a year, ideally at the start or end of the sailing season, with a full visual and hand-over-hand tactile check of every halyard, sheet, and control line. Heavy users — offshore passages, frequent racing — should check more often and pay extra attention to sheaves, clutches, and any point where a line runs over hardware.
Is a fuzzy cover always a sign I need to replace the line?
