Dynamic Dinghy Transport and Storage: Dollies by Class, Slings, Racks and Trailer Racks

Dynamic is a US maker of dinghy dollies and rack systems, and it states that its products are made in the USA. This is a brand parent page: it holds no products of its own and sends you to the four collections where the range is listed — dollies fitted to a specific class, replacement parts for them, storage and trailer racks, and a hiking bench. A Dynamic dolly is built around your hull, so the first decision is the class of boat, not the size of the wheels.

Where to Find Each Part of the Range
How a Dynamic Dolly Is Built
  • Boat-specific fit: Dynamic describes boat-specific tube and sling lengths that give each hull a custom fit, balance the handle load and make the boat easy to manoeuvre.
  • Frame: anodised structural-grade aluminium with rounded corners and through-bolted joints. Round aluminium tubes are covered with a plastic hose, so the hull never touches bare aluminium.
  • Sling: a 3 in non-stretch polyester sling wraps around the hull, with eyelets on the sling and handle fitting so you can tie the boat down in storage, on a trailer or in a rack. Tying down through the handle fitting eyelet helps prevent slippage on steep ramps.
  • Wheels: pneumatic, non-corrosive 16 in x 4 in wheels on the models we checked. For soft sand, Dynamic says you can reduce the tyre pressure to widen the footprint.
  • Breakdown: snap buttons on the wheel shaft and tongue tubes and wing nuts on the axle tube cross fitting let the dolly come apart.
Light Boats and Heavier or Double-Handed Boats

Dynamic makes a heavier dolly style for double-handed and heavier boats. The International 505 dolly is described as made for heavier or double-handed boats, and the range includes dollies labelled Heavy, such as the Hunter 140 and the Flying Junior. For a dinghy with a plumb stem, such as the Finn, Jet 14 and Interclub, Dynamic describes a style with a more upright bow tube. Match the dolly to the class named in the title, and use the product page to confirm it before you order.

Choosing Racks and Trailer Racks
  • Storage rack or trailer rack: a storage rack holds boats when they are not in use; a trailer rack mounts to your trailer frame to carry several dinghies at once.
  • Frame width matters: for the Optimist Trailer Rack, which carries Optimists side-entry, two per level, the listing recommends a trailer frame width of 56 to 60 in, and says wider frames need a customised rack from Dynamic. It also needs at least 36 in of frame width where the forward cross bar rests.
  • Rack pads and U-bolts: for that Optimist rack the listing recommends 12 sets of Rack Pads and 4 U-Bolts to complete the order, using three pads per level.
Who It's For

Dinghy and one-design sailors who launch and recover from a ramp or a beach, clubs and junior programmes storing fleets in racks, and owners replacing a worn sling or a bent tube on a dolly they already own. For a davit or motor lift on a larger boat see dinghy davits and motor lifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right Dynamic dolly for my dinghy?
Pick the dolly named for your class, such as the Optimist, 420, 505 or Finn, because the tubes and sling are sized to that hull. If your class has a heavier version, as the Hunter 140 and Flying Junior listings do, choose the one labelled Heavy for a heavier or double-handed boat.

What wheels does a Dynamic dolly use?
On the dollies we checked, including the International 505, the wheels are pneumatic and non-corrosive, 16 in x 4 in, and can be secured on the wheel shaft with the screws provided. Lowering the tyre pressure helps in soft sand.

Can I replace a worn sling or lengthen the dolly?
Yes. Slings are sold on their own as 3 in non-stretch polyester webbing in lengths including 64 in to 96 in, and extension tubes come in 24 in and 36 in. Match the sling length to the one on your dolly.

How many dinghies can a trailer rack carry?
The range includes 2, 3 and 5 boat trailer racks (the 5 boat rack is Laser and Sunfish size) and an Optimist rack for eight. Check your trailer frame width against the listing before ordering.

What should I check on an older dolly or rack?
Dynamic's own advice is to check a rack for cracks in the plastic fittings and for bent aluminium extrusions, and to replace parts as necessary. Slings and extension tubes are available as parts.
