Mounting Instructions
Tools & Materials
- Hex keys 4 mm and 5 mm
- Ø6.5 mm (1/4") drill
- Bedding compound
- 5 × M6 (1/4") countersunk head screws and nuts (length to suit deck thickness)
- 5 × large washers or a backing plate
- Ring spanner to match the nuts
Steps
- Drill Ø6.5mm (1/4") bolt holes using the winch template; keep drilling dust away from the winch.
- Remove screw (1) and top cap (2).
- Remove the self-tailing arm (3) and drum (5).
- Apply a light coat of bedding compound on the bottom of the base (16) so that each bolt hole is bedded; keep the drain grooves clear.
- Fasten the base (16) with 5 M6 (1/4") countersunk head screws, large washers or a backing plate.
- Assemble in reverse order (note the curved spring "arm" when fitting the pawl springs).
- Check: the drum turns smoothly clockwise by hand and will not turn anti-clockwise; turning the handle clockwise the drum turns slowly, anti-clockwise it turns quickly.
Service Instructions
Strip & Clean
- Tools: hex key 4 mm, medium screwdriver, winch handle, ANDERSEN winch grease.
- Remove screw (1) and top cap (2), then the self-tailing arm (3) and drum (5).
- Insert a winch handle and pull up the drive shaft (6) gently while carefully turning gear wheel (15) and ratchet gear (12); remove the drive shaft.
- Remove the plugs (6.4), pawls (6.3) and arm springs (6.2).
- Remove ratchet gear (12) and bushing (11), then ratchet gear (13).
- Release the roller bearing (7) by gently inserting a small screwdriver between bearing and base (16).
- Remove shaft (14) and gear wheel (15) with a screwdriver.
- Clean all parts in white spirits / mineral spirits, including the gear teeth.
- Assemble in reverse order, lightly greasing gear teeth, drive shaft, roller bearing, shafts, pawls, springs and bushings with a small soft brush. Pawls get only a very thin film of ANDERSEN WINCH GREASE.
General Information
- Normal use: dismantle, clean and lubricate the winch once every second year. Extensive use (racing, charter, blue water sailing): lubricate once every year.
- Use ANDERSEN WINCH GREASE (a silicone/Teflon grease). Most other greases, including "marine grease", are not suitable for winches and can cause malfunction.
- Replace the pawl arm springs every second year; spare arm springs and other parts are in the Andersen Service Kit for your winch.
- Remove the winch handle when it is not in use but the winch is under load.
- Only use the recommended line sizes in the self-tailer. With mooring lines, do NOT use the self-tailing function and keep the line clear of the self-tailing arm.
- Place the winch according to the ideal rope entry shown in the manual, with the self-tailing arm within the shaded area.
- To identify the output drive gear: insert a winch handle and rotate in both directions; the drive gear only rotates clockwise, in a fast and a slow speed.
When assembling, push each pawl against its spring: it must move smoothly and return by itself to engage the teeth. If not, clean and lubricate pawls and gears and check again; if they still do not work, replace the springs and recheck. Malfunctioning pawls may lead to unexpected release of the winch force.
PVD-coated surfaces
- Rinse regularly in fresh water to remove salt, dirt or other contaminants and dry gently with a soft cloth.
- Grease or other marks: a mild, abrasive-free cleaner such as spray-on glass cleaning solution.
- Never use caustic detergents or other aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents.

Item 13 for STE / STE BD (532860) and STE AD (534210) applies from version 3.4. The service steps mention plugs (6.4), which are not listed in the parts list.
Earlier 40ST Versions
40ST ver. 3.1 / 40ST FS ver. 1.1

In this edition the upper pawls (7) are not removable; the lower pawls (10), arm springs (9) and springs (8) come out for service, and parts are cleaned in benzine. Its installation check reads the opposite way to V.6.0 (handle clockwise = drum fast) – as printed.

Safety Notices
- Do not install or operate the winch before reading and fully understanding the Product Manual; every operator must be trained and aware of the hazards.
- Keep children and anyone not qualified at a safe distance from the winch and from rigging or fittings under load; tie back long hair and loose clothing.
- Remove winch handles (and turn off power on electric versions) when not in use and before any maintenance.
- Lifting operations: never with the rope in the self-tailer, never using the self-tailer as a cleat, and always with two persons keeping visual contact with the load. Tie off the rope or lead it to a cleat or bollard.
