Installation & Use
- Ensure each hole in the deck is bedded, including the big hole in the centre. Do not put bedding compound IN the thread holes in the deck plate.
- Ensure the sealing ring (O-ring) on top of the gear unit sits in its groove.
- Do not use smaller wire than recommended: it can cause malfunction and, in the worst case, fire. Keep the wires as short as possible.
- The motor has a built-in overload circuit breaker that breaks the circuit before the motor gets too hot; after a short cooling period (depending on temperature under deck, ventilation etc.) it is ready again.
- If the motor has cut out, insert a standard winch handle and use the winch as a 2 speed manual winch meanwhile. Andersen recommends removing the handle when the winch is operated electrically.
- The electric drive unit is lubricated, sealed and needs no further maintenance. The winch on deck is a standard self tailing winch: dismantle, clean and lubricate it once a year, with a further lubrication check during the year under extensive use (racing, charter, blue water sailing).
- Andersen recommends always using ANDERSEN WINCH GREASE (silicone/Teflon®); most other greases, including "marine grease", are not suitable.
- Template and special tools are included; the electric unit can be turned in 8 horizontal steps (45°). Winch and electric unit can be dismantled separately; the electric unit is bronze.
- Modular Power System: change to a hydraulic drive unit or from a 2+1 to a 2+2 electric drive unit.
- The mounting instructions are shared with the 52/56/58/66/68 STE (pictures 1–8); the manual notes that a 58ST is used as the illustration and that your winch may look different but assembles as illustrated. Picture 5 is the bedding step.
Connecting Diagrams & Wire Sizes
- Connecting diagrams are given for 2+1 speed 12V and 24V and for 2+2 speed 12V and 24V (shared with other STE sizes).
- 2+1 speed (12V and 24V): do not use connection 1D1.
- All versions: the fuse must be of a slow blow type.
- Wire length = distance from battery to switch box + distance from switch box to motor.
The wire dimension and fuse size table printed in this manual lists the 12, 46, 52, 58, 68 and 78 STE but has no row for the 56; ask us for the values for your winch.
