General

  • Ensure each hole in the deck is bedded, including the big hole in the centre. Do not put bedding compound IN the thread holes in the deck plate.
  • Ensure the sealing ring (O-ring) on top of the gear unit sits in its groove.
  • Do not use smaller wire than recommended: it can cause malfunction and, in the worst case, fire. Keep the wires as short as possible.
  • The motor has a built-in overload circuit breaker that breaks the circuit before the motor gets too hot; after a short cooling period (depending on temperature under deck, ventilation etc.) it is ready again.
  • The electric drive unit is lubricated, sealed and needs no further maintenance. The part on deck needs regular service: dismantle, clean and lubricate once a year, with a further lubrication check during the year under extensive use (charter, blue water sailing).
  • Andersen recommends always using ANDERSEN WINCH GREASE (silicone/Teflon®); most other greases, including "marine grease", are not suitable.
  • Template and special tools are included; the electric unit can be turned in 8 horizontal steps (45°).
  • Capstan and electric unit can be dismantled separately; a hydraulic drive unit can replace the electric one (Modular Power System).

Motor Alignment

  • The motor must be aligned with the capstan: non-aligned motors are noisy and wear the gears faster. The motor flange must be flush with the deck plate and the eight-sided nut must fit snugly into the octagon in the deck plate.
  • Drill the deck hole wider than the motor flange (free space between deck and flange) and clean it so the flange does not catch fibreglass or wood splinters.
  • Keep the underside of the deck plate clean and free from resin, varnish or sealants. No sealant between flange and deck plate: an O-ring makes the connection waterproof. Extra sealant may be applied on top of the deck plate next to the mounting nut after installation.
  • Make sure the locking screw on the mounting nut does not protrude beyond the contact surface before tightening the nut; tighten the locking screw once the nut is secure.

Installation dimensions (page 5) and the drilling template RD100532 (page 6) are in the PDF and are marked "non-dimensional accuracy": use the template supplied with the capstan.

Minimum Wire Dimensions & Fuse Sizes

Wire length 12V wire 12V fuse 12V battery 24V wire 24V fuse 24V battery
0-3 m / 0-10 ft 70 mm² 200 A 360 Ah 35mm² 125 A 240Ah
3-8 m / 10-27 ft 95 mm² 224 A 360 Ah 50mm² 200 A 240Ah

Not for continuous service. Wire length = battery to switch box + switch box to motor. Fuse must be of a slow blow type. Connecting diagram: do not use connection 1D1.
