When supplied as an E1 electric winch, the gear wheel is already fitted inside the winch (its hexagonal end protrudes from the base into the motor drive shaft). In a conversion kit it comes separately and replaces the existing gear wheel.

Installation

Included

  • Motor unit, gear wheel [4], push button with 500 mm (19 5/8") control cable [A1] and gasket [A2], 3 pcs. #6 x 19 mm screws [A12], eye-bolt M6 [A9]
  • 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm Allen keys [A4–A8], pin spanner (5 mm pins) [A11], drilling template [A3], sticker set [A10], product manual [A13]

Tools & Fasteners Required

  • Phillips screwdrivers #1 & #2; Ø10.5 mm (7/16") and Ø3 mm (1/8") drills; Ø66 mm (2 5/8") hole-saw or jigsaw; Ø25 mm (1") drill or hole saw
  • 6 pcs. M10 (3/8") bolts and nuts (length for deck thickness), 6 pcs. large M10 (3/8") ID washers or backing plate; 17 mm AF spanner for M10 Nyloc nuts (5/8" AF for 3/8")
  • Solvent, sealing compound, crimping tool, marine grade power wire with Ø8 mm terminals, circuit breaker/fuse (sold separately), cable clips
  1. Position. Template [A3] on a flat area; the 58 & 62 ST winches have eight self-tailing arm positions (on the template). Check below-deck room for the motor (eight positions at 45° increments). Line entry angle 3-8° below horizontal.
  2. Deck plate / winch base. Drill Ø10.5mm holes for the M10 bolts (Ø1/2" for 3/8" bolts), cut the Ø66mm (2 5/8") hole for the drive shaft housing, clean hole and deck (solvent), seal (aluminium boats: galvanic isolating ring/gasket) and bolt down with M10 (or 3/8") bolts, large backing washers or plate and Nyloc nuts.
  3. Fit the motor unit (two or more people; a lifting device is recommended). Remove the clamping ring from the drive shaft housing, fit the M6 eye bolt to the top of the drive shaft and raise the motor on a strong rope through the deck and winch base. Rotate it to suit the under-deck cavity: the octagonal detail on the drive shaft housing flange must sit snugly in the octagonal recess so the motor flange is flush with the underside of the winch base. Check the O-ring on top of the housing is in its groove, make sure the grub screw does not protrude above the clamping ring, tighten the ring with the pin spanner, then the grub screw. No sealant between flange and winch base – the O-ring seals; extra sealant may go on top around the clamping ring, keeping it off the sealing ring. A misaligned motor is noisy and wears its gears fast.
  4. Winch. Remove the self-tailing arm screws (5mm Allen key [A7]), lift off arm and drum, place the base/stem on the deck plate with the holes aligned and fit it with the 6 screws [7] supplied (the parts list gives 7 pcs, as printed); reassemble the winch.
  5. Conversion of an existing manual winch – replace the standard lower central gear wheel with the one supplied with the motor unit: pull the drive shaft out with a locking winch handle (turn a little each way and lift), remove the upper gear wheel through the upper side window, remove the lower side gear wheel shaft and the lower side gear wheel through the bottom window, remove the lower central gear wheel, then the circlip and shut-off disc on the underside of the base. Insert the new gear wheel from below so its hexagonal end protrudes slightly from the base (hold the winch upside down until the lower side gear secures it), refit lower side gear and upper gear. A new E1 electric winch already has this gear wheel fitted.
  6. Push button. Needs 25mm depth clearance behind the mounting surface; supplied with 500 mm (19 5/8") of cable, the motor unit with 1400 mm (55 3/16") of control cable – if more than 1500 mm (59") is needed between push button and motor unit (as printed) you must provide your own extension. Drill a Ø19 mm (3/4") hole at the centre plus a 5mm (3/16") hole beside it for the breather tube, or a Ø25mm (1") hole at a 2mm offset to the centre; use the gasket to drill 3 x Ø3 mm (1/8") holes, fit the clear breather tube, gasket and button (hinged cover opening upwards on a vertical surface), seal the holes and fix with the 3 pcs. #6 x 19 mm screws.
  7. Electrical. Connect push button wires to motor wires (Detail A of the connection diagram), then power as below.

Wire, Circuit Breaker & Battery Capacity

  • Measure the total wire run from the battery to the motor unit and back; choose wire size, breaker and battery capacity from the table. Never use smaller wire than recommended – it can cause malfunction and, at worst, fire.
  • Circuit breaker or fuse in the positive line, as close to the battery as possible and accessible; a fuse must be "slow blow" or "long delay" for the start-up current spike.
  • Positive (+) motor terminal to battery (+), negative (–) to battery (–). Reversed polarity blows the controller's internal fuse.
Winch Wire length* 12V: wire / breaker / add. capacity per winch / min. bank 24V: wire / breaker / add. capacity per winch / min. bank

* Wire length = total cable length from battery to motor and back. Place the breaker where it can be switched off when the winch is not in use. The gear wheel part number is not linked: the store lists it under a different winch size.

Troubleshooting & Status Codes

The push button flashes a number of times in quick succession, pauses, then repeats.

Flashes Status
1 Maximum working load reached: the motor has cut out at the pre-set maximum load for electric operation. Ready 5 seconds after releasing the button, once the load is below the limit and the button is pressed again.
2 Low system voltage: below 10.5 Volts (12V) / 21 Volts (24V) idle, or below 7.0 Volts (12V) / 18 Volts (24V) running. Recharge; resets above 11.0 Volts (12V) / 22 Volts (24V).
3 Maximum motor temperature: resets when the motor has cooled (may take time); ventilate the motor.
4 Control board above 85°C: resets below 75°C; ventilate the motor.
5 Push button error: a button was pressed when power was switched on. Release the button; if the error continues check the button wiring.
6 Maximum continuous run time (approximately 10 minutes): release and press the button again.
7 Motor relay activated 20,000 times: must be replaced – contact Ronstan or your Andersen distributor.

Reverse Polarity – Internal Fuse

Reversed polarity blows the motor's internal 5A glass fuse on the PCB. To replace it: cut the cable ties holding the control cable to the motor cover, remove the two screws at the end of the outer cover (#1 Phillips), rotate the cover slightly and pull it off – after the first 5mm (3/16") the O-ring releases and very little force is needed. Set the cover aside with no tension on the internal wires, replace the fuse, and reassemble without trapping wires, aligning the cover screw holes with the internal threaded rods before pushing it over the O-ring.

Service & Maintenance

  • Shut off power first. Service the winch on top of the motor unit as described in its own winch product manual.
  • The motor is a sealed unit: no regular servicing of internal parts.
  • Re-lubricate the drive shaft sealing ring [10] once a year (twice a year under intensive use such as racing, charter or blue water sailing) with a grease such as Klüber ISOFLEX TOPAS NB 52 or Andersen Winch Grease; remove the winch to reach it.

Motor Offset & Weights

Value
Minimum Ox 334mm (13 3/16") with Oy 180mm (7 1/16")
Minimum Oy 121mm (4 3/4") with Ox 370mm (14 9/16")
Weight 58ST / 62ST Winch only 15.8 kg (34.8 lb); winch & motor unit 35.0 kg (77.1 lb)

Offset values are with the motor in the optimum position to minimise Ox or Oy; Oy includes the push button cable fitting on the motor housing. Turning the motor in 45° steps changes Ox and Oy. Extensions are available for thicker decks. The full installation dimension drawing and a reduced (not to scale) drilling template are in the manual PDF.

Safety Notices

  • Keep children and anyone not qualified to operate an electric winch clear of the winch and of rigging under load; tie back long hair and loose clothing.
  • Rope override or other fault: stop the winch and turn off power before clearing it.
  • Turn off power at the circuit breaker and remove winch handles when not in use, and before any maintenance.
  • Lifting operations: never with the rope in the self-tailer, two persons with constant visual contact with the load, and never use the self-tailer as a cleat for a lifted or suspended load – tie off or lead the rope to a cleat or bollard.
