* W30 drilling angles: 60° + 60° + 60° + 60° + 120°. Power (P) is the ratio 1:P between the force on the handle and the force on the line, friction not included; S is the line recovered with one 360-degree turn of the handle. AL = aluminium, BR = bronze. This is an older Antal guide: for the current W plain-top winches use the W Winches manual.

Installation

  • Lead: the line should reach the drum at 2 to 10 degrees from the horizontal for correct winding.

1. Dismantling

  • Self-tailing W40, W44, W48, W52, W60, W65, W70 (Fig. 3): take off the circlip (A) – note which way up it comes off – and the stainless steel cap (B), unscrew the two screws (C) and take off the plastic cap (D). Pull out the 2 large bronze half-rings (E) and lift off the drum with the ST disks and ST drum.
  • Self-tailing W16 and W30 (Fig. 4): take off the circlip (A) to remove the drum and ST arm.
  • Non self-tailing models (Fig. 5): take off the circlip (A) to remove the drum.

2–4. Base

  1. Two speed models: position the output gear towards the load pull direction (Fig. 6), mark the holes on deck, take off the base and drill.
  2. Sealant on the screw holes between deck and base, without blocking the drain holes in the bottom of the base. Countersunk head screws (Fig. 7); socket cap screws for the W70 only (Fig. 8). Size and number of bolts as in the table.
  3. Refit the drum by reversing the dismantling.

5. Aligning the Self-Tailing Arm (Fig. 9)

  • After removing the 2 bronze half-rings (E), unscrew the screw (F) from the stripper (G) and take off the ST arm: it can be repositioned in many positions to give the proper line exit.

In Use

  • Spring-loaded self-tailing disks adapt automatically to even the thinnest lines; this system is used on all Antal winches. Spec the line size for each model from the table.
  • Put at least 3 turns of line on the drum, then over the ST arm and between the spring-loaded ST disks; with fewer turns the load on the self-tailing plates can make the line slip.
  • Put the handle in the main shaft and turn clockwise or counterclockwise according to the model:
Models Clockwise Counterclockwise
W6, W7, W8, W9 1 speed neutral
W16, W30, W42, W47 high speed low speed
W44, W48, W52, W60 low speed high speed
Self-tailing W16, W30 neutral 1 speed
Self-tailing W16.2, W30.2 high speed low speed
Self-tailing W40 to W70 low speed high speed

Maintenance

  1. Old grease: after taking the winch apart, remove the old grease with a solvent like diesel fuel, a brush and a dry cloth.
  2. Lubrication (Fig. 10): brush grease on all moving parts including pawls, gears, spindles and shaft bearing washers; the guide specifies Type 400 (green) with Teflon.
  3. Pawls and gears (Fig. 11): check the gears couple correctly with the pawls when reassembling.
  4. Protection: grease protects aluminium where it touches dissimilar metals – use it on stainless screws, threads and washers. Vaseline oil protects the drum: apply inside and out, wait 24 to 48 hours, then clean and dry with a soft cloth.
  5. Frequency: in normal use, break down the winches twice a year, at the beginning and at the end of the season.
