Edson #910 Morse Single Lever Engine Control — Instructions

Single Lever Engine Handle, Faceplate & Morse SL3 Mechanism | #28204

  • Single lever control; uses Series 33 control cables.
  • Neutral lock-out mechanism revs the engine for battery charging.
  • Mounts on any vertical bulkhead up to 1/2" thick; also available alone for bulkhead mounting.
  • Stainless handle, stainless faceplate and gasket included.
Dimension (data sheet) Value
Faceplate 3 7/8" × 3 7/8"
Mechanism width / mounting flange width 4 1/4" / 5"
Mechanism length (side view) 11 5/16"
Handle height above faceplate / handle offset 7" / 1 5/8"
Lower arm depth 15/16"

Shift & Throttle Cable Connection – Control End

  • “Push” and “pull” are the directions of cable motion to shift into forward or open the throttle. Check the engine manufacturer's manual for shift and throttle direction and adjustment.
  • Hole numbers on the mechanism chassis correspond to the holes in the shift and throttle levers: e.g. cable mount to hole 4 on the chassis and cable end fitting to hole 4 on the lever.
  • Cables and wiring should be pre-installed on the control before final mounting.
  • Right-hand operation shown in the drawings; left-hand is opposite.
Function Cable Hole Engines listed by Edson

OS (OMC) 5
KM (Mercury) 6
Pull to go forward (shift) 33C 4 Evinrude, Johnson, OMC I/O, Mercury & Mariner O/B, Mercury I/O, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Nissan, Tohatsu, US Marine & inboards requiring “pull” to go forward shift
OS (OMC) 8
KM (Mercury) 7
Push to open throttle – 1 Johnson, Evinrude, OMC I/O, Mercury & 25, Yamaha 90 & up, US Marine
Pull to open throttle – 2 Mercury I/O & O/B, Volvo I/O, Suzuki, Honda, Nissan, Tohatsu, Yamaha 70 HP & under

Cable options at the control end: “KM” cable (Mercury), “OS” cable (OMC) and 33C cable, retained by a snap-on cover; the 33C cable uses a clip, flat head screw and swivel bearing. The 33C cable rod end should extend 0.125in (3.175mm) through the pivot.

Neutral Safety Switch

  • The SL3 control has a neutral safety switch to prevent the engine starting in gear.
  • With the control in neutral, connect one wire of a battery-powered test light or meter to the common terminal and one to the “NO” (normally open) terminal: the test light must light.
  • Connect the switch between the ignition switch (start lead) and the starter solenoid.
  • Caution: there must be continuity only in neutral; in gear there must be no electrical continuity.

Throttle Connection

  1. Make sure the control is in the neutral detent.
  2. The fuel lever should rest lightly against the idle stop on the carburetor.
  3. Connect the throttle cable to the fuel lever.

Disconnect the throttle cable from the motor before making idle adjustments: adjusting idle with the cable connected may jam against the idle stop, and the control may not function properly, damaging control, cable and/or motor.
