Forespar LanoCote Prop & Bottom — Application Instructions

Foul-Release Coating

  • Lanolin-based foul-release coating with biodegradable additives; can be applied with the boat on the hard or in the water.
  • Forms a skin to which algae, sea grass, worms, corals and barnacles have difficulty adhering; motion through the water releases the growth.
  • Correctly applied to metal props and running gear it can give up to six months, or more in some cases, of protection. Results vary with local water temperature, salinity, water chemistry and marine life.
  • On a boat used infrequently growth is still likely, at a reduced rate, and wipes off easily (diver in the water, or hose on the hard).
  • Also gives corrosion protection to bronze, aluminum and stainless parts.
  • No waiting time after application: just re-launch. The whitish skin forms in 72 hours.
  • Non-toxic, biodegradable, California Prop 65 compliant, no petrochemicals or known carcinogens.

Forespar suggests testing it on your prop for a month or two to measure the results in your waters.

Application Tips

Surfaces must be clean, as for bottom paint. Aim for an even coat of approximately .010 in (.25 mm) – the thickness of a business card. Thinner is better; running the prop and water flow will smooth the coat.

Application Preparation Method
Prop, shafts & running gear – under water Cleaned metal surface Take a golf-ball-sized handful at 50–70 °F (10–21 °C), press and spread smoothly to approx. .010 in (.25 mm). Launch any time; a whitish skin forms in 72 hours or less.
Prop, shafts & running gear – on the hard Remove all debris and clean down to bright metal; sand with 80-grit paper or finer for "tooth"; clean with solvent Heat the metal (or use sunlight) to 100–120 °F (38–49 °C) for longest-lasting results; apply by hand or paintbrush to approx. .010 in (.25 mm).
Boat hull or inflatable bottom Clean bottom, vessel on the hard Heat the product to approx. 100–120 °F (38–49 °C) and roll on smoothly with a short-nap roller to approx. .010 in (.25 mm). Launch any time; the whitish skin forms after approx. 72 hours in the water.

Under water: if needed, warm it slightly to the consistency of soft putty or butter. Do not use it liquid/melted in the water – it will float out of the jar. If it melts in heat or sun, cool the closed jar in the water until firm.

Cleanup

  • Wear disposable latex, nitrile or vinyl gloves: the product is designed to be sticky and will stick to just about everything.
  • Mineral spirits and disposable rags clean it from surrounding surfaces and tools.
