Forespar WL-1 Floating Strobe Light — Installation

WL-1 Man-Overboard Strobe

  • Floating marker light deployed to mark where a person or object has fallen overboard.
  • Stored inverted in the stainless steel mounting bracket (included), ready for instant use; once thrown overboard it starts flashing automatically when it floats upright.
  • High-intensity xenon strobe, visible for several miles from the air and through 360° of horizon; penetrates rain, fog and haze.
  • Brilliance does not fall with battery drain: the flash frequency slowly diminishes as the battery nears the end of its capacity.
  • Body and lens molded in high-impact plastic: high U.V. resistance, zero corrosion.
Battery (6 V lantern) Flash rate Expected duration
Fresh alkaline 50 to 70 flashes per minute (U.S. Coast Guard required rate) 50 to 52 hours (over three times the U.S.C.G. minimum)
Carbon zinc – About one-third: 16 to 17 hours

Battery Installation

Water marker lights, including the WL-1, are shipped without batteries.

  1. Hold the light with the strobe down and make sure the circuit board is fully seated in the black frame holder, circuit contact area facing upward.
  2. Seat a 6 volt lantern battery (alkaline is best) with spring/coil terminals in the remaining half of the case/housing.
  3. Invert the battery inside the case/housing over the circuit board and rotate the half of the case holding the battery until threaded HAND TIGHT ONLY.

Use ONLY a 6-volt, spring-post style lantern battery (alkaline preferably). Forespar does not supply batteries.

Care and Use

  • Do not clean the case or lens with solvents or petroleum distillates. Use only soap and fresh water or, if necessary, rubbing alcohol.
  • Attach the light to your horseshoe or ring buoy with a 5-foot lanyard of floating line such as polypropylene.
