Fastener Choice
- Through-deck with access from below: hex head, socket head cap screw, cheese head or fillister head.
- Tapped holes with no access from below: socket head cap screw, cheese head or fillister head.
- Hex heads allow one-person mounting: the head is held by the sides of the inset.
- On the 3280 only 6 mm hex-head bolts fit.
Mounting
- Mount on a flat area of deck, reinforced if necessary to take a load equal to the breaking load of the fairlead.
- Marine epoxy and G10 suppliers are good sources of deck reinforcement techniques; if in doubt, consult the builder.
- Drill carefully and slightly bevel the top of each hole so the sealant forms a small ring at deck level.
- Fill the hole and bevel with marine sealant and use every fastener hole.
- Fasteners in A4 (316) or A2 (18-8) stainless, with large washers or backing plates and locknuts under deck.
Failure to ensure the correct deck strength can result in the fairleads pulling off the deck suddenly and unexpectedly under high load.
Inspection and Maintenance
- Carefully inspect fairleads and mounting hardware for loosening, cracks or damage.
- Clean by frequent flushing with fresh water.
- Teak cleaners and caustic solutions can discolour the part; not covered by the warranty.
