Part number code: VM + size + PCLC in inches + PCLO in inches. PCLC = pin centre length with the boom pulled down; PCLO = with the boom pushed up to the maximum desired height. Fitting thickness is the mast/boom tang width the fork ends fit. Custom lengths can be ordered with the form in the PDF; production-boat applications are listed on page 5.

The Vang-Master pushes the boom up with air pressure (Schrader valve) and pulls it down through an integral 2:1 Dyneema purchase. VM7 and VM8 add a lead ring and deadend for a cascaded 4:1.

4:1 or 6:1 kits cascade the primary purchase to 8:1 or 12:1 on VM1–VM6, and to 16:1 or 24:1 on VM7 and VM8. Reeving diagrams are on pages 8–11 of the PDF.

Planning

  • Optimal vang angle is 45°; the lower the mast fitting, the lower the loads on fittings and spars.
  • Hold the boom horizontal on the main halyard and set the vang so its sailing length is at or a little under half stroke.
  • Check the fork ends fit the existing gooseneck and boom lug and rotate freely.
  • New mast fitting: seat it flat on the aft side of the mast, right side up; SS rivets or drill and tap.
  • New boom fitting: check its fore-aft orientation; locate it with the boom at about mid-stroke.

Commissioning

  • Attach to the fittings and pump air through the Schrader valve with a quality bicycle floor pump able to exceed 100 psi (690 kPa).
  • Hold the boom about 10° above sailing position on the halyard while pumping, then ease and check boom angle and return rate.
  • Too soft: add pressure. Too much: press the valve post with a small screwdriver.
  • Before removing the boom for storage or transport, depressurize the cylinder.

The Vang-Master contains compressed air. Do not disassemble unless you are an authorized Harken service center. It should not need rebuilding; if it stops working, contact Harken.
