Lewmar Flush Hatch 2G / 3G — Fitting Instructions

Deck Recess and Preparation

  • Flat surface, max tolerance +/- 1mm, minimum deck/hull thickness 15 (as printed). Keep all fastenings clear of moulding radii.
  • The hatch sits in a recess shaped to Lewmar's drawings: at least 10mm between the hinge edge of the acrylic and the recess edge, and a maximum 8mm radius at the base of the recess.
  • Place the lower frame square on the opening; check the hatch operates before sealing and fastening. Allow drainage channels or a tube round the hatch so water cannot be trapped.
  • Do not open and close the hatch more than necessary until the lower frame is fastened.
  • Template for multiple hatches; seal exposed composite laminate; deburr metal decks. Hatches are not stiffening members.

Bedding and Fastening

Bedding compound in the lower-frame channel: good adhesion (e.g. silicone), marine grade, 3mm minimum and compressible. Drill two holes in opposite corners first, fit them, then drill the rest and fasten from the centre outwards. Silicone or Tef Gel under the screw heads; take care not to damage the paint.

Deck type Fastening Torque
Wood M5 through bolts or marine grade wood screws 2.25 - 3.0 Nm: standard / marine ply 3Nm, hardwood 2.75Nm, softwood 2.25Nm
GRP / Steel / Al alloy M5 through bolts or machine screws into tapped plates 3.0 Nm
Fixing sizes M5, 10UNC, 2BA, 3/16", wood screws (min. length 40mm)
Hinge fixings M6 or 1/4" through bolts only

Through bolts wherever fixings pass through the lower hinges. Re-check closing, locking and even seal pressure once installed.

User Notes

  • Locked ventilation: close the handles into the centre slot of the catch block; do not stand on or load the lid in this position.
  • 3G: protect the lower-frame seal during boat construction from hoses and cables dragged over it.
  • 3G hatches are mainly for light and ventilation. Sizes 44, 54 and above can also serve as emergency exits to ISO 9094 when fitted with exterior handles; protect the seal if used as regular access for people, sails or gear.
  • Wash with soap, water and a soft cloth; never abrasive or solvent cleaners on the acrylic.
  • Keep hands clear of lever and lid pinch zones when operating and adjusting.

Compliance: ISO/DIS 12216.2002, design category "A", areas IIa, III and IV. Fitting vents etc. invalidates it.
