Rope: 12–14 mm (1/2–9/16", U.S.A. only).

  • Combined rope/chain: three-strand rope only, never multi-plait, joined to the chain with a tight, tapered back splice that runs freely through the windlass.
  • Loading the RMS: hold out the control arm, feed the rode into the entry hole until it drops into the locker, align it in the gipsy and release the arm, tie off, then power-load the rest.

Planning

  • Rode and bow roller centre-lines must match; the rode must not run more than 6° above the gipsy centre-line.
  • At least 300 mm (12") between the underside of the deck and the stowed rode. Pad uneven decks, reinforce light ones; over 80 mm (3 1/8") deck, use longer studs.
  • Allow room to work the clutch lever and the manual recovery handle. Do not use a permanent adhesive/sealant.
  • In the box: windlass, 4 × M10 (ISO) studs with nuts and washers, deck template, base mat. Tools: 12 mm (1/2") drill, Ø50 mm (2") and 80 mm (3 1/8") hole saws, jigsaw, 2 × 17 mm A/F spanners, crimper.

Deck Fitting

  • Fix the template in line with the rode centre-line.
  • Drill 4 × Ø12 mm (1/2") stud holes, 1 × Ø50 mm (2") cable hole, and 1 × Ø80 mm (3 1/8") rode hole or 2 × Ø50 mm (2"); remove the material between them.
  • Seal the cut edges with marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy.
  • Lock two nuts together to screw each stud in firmly, then remove them; trim studs if they could snag the rode (5 mm max). Fit the base mat and windlass, then tighten the nuts fully.

The deck template (second download) is full size: print it at 100% (1:1) and check it against the windlass before cutting.

  • Use marine-grade copper wire with crimp terminals; keep windlass wiring separate and connect to the starter battery where possible.
  • Keep the circuit breaker dry; wire all switches in parallel. Add a grounding strap between the mounting studs and an earthing point if necessary.
  • Check the windlass runs the right way from every switch and causes no electromagnetic interference.

Operation

Power and Free Fall

  • Check for swimmers; use UP or DOWN. Do not overload or stall; the splice should not be in the windlass with the anchor raised.
  • Free fall: lever on the clutch nut, push clockwise to make sure it is tight, release the rode from its strong point, then pull anti-clockwise to release; control the descent by pushing gently clockwise. Push firmly clockwise to stop, remove the lever and tie off.
  • Warping: rode secured to an independent strong point, clutch released (anti-clockwise), at least 3 loose coils on the drum, start and tension gently. Never put chain on the drum; re-engage the clutch afterwards.
  • Isolate the windlass at the circuit breaker when not in use; secure the anchor in the bow fitting and the rode to a strong point.

Manual Recovery (MRM option)

  • Rotate the Manual Recovery Module until the drive lever shows; swing it out until it lines up with the clutch nut.
  • Use the clutch nut hole in the operating handle to slacken the clutch nut anti-clockwise.
  • Insert the handle in the slot on the module circumference and pull back / push anti-clockwise to recover the rode; the module ratchets forward, no need to remove the handle between strokes.
  • Remove the handle, tighten the clutch nut with it, return the drive lever flush, and secure the rode to an independent strong point.

Servicing

  • Regularly: fresh-water wash, check clutch nut tightness (it can work loose; remove the handle after tightening), check mounting nuts, clean and lightly grease electrical connections.
  • Annually: check cables, strip, clean and lightly grease above-deck components.
