  • Protected for use in engine compartments.
  • CE: 89/336/EC (EMC), BS EN60945:1997; 94/25/ec (RCD), BS EN28846:1993.
  • Part of an electronics manufacturer's autopilot system, for boats with existing Mamba steering. Fitting by a competent marine installation technician is strongly recommended.

Preparation

  • The drive mounts directly on the steering system's bevelhead or reduction gearbox via an interface plate, in any attitude.
  • If the gearbox has no drive interface plate, it can be returned to the factory for adaptation at the owner's cost.
  • Do not attach the drive to structures that support cabins (noise, vibration). Not waterproof: mount it dry and clear of bilge water, accessible for service.
  • EMC: at least 3ft (1m) from VHF equipment and cables, 7ft (2m) from SSB and from a radar beam; supply from a battery other than the engine start battery (below 10V the equipment can reset).

Mounting

  • Supplied: Mamba drive, securing bolts with washers and lock-nuts. You also need the Mamba bevelhead or reduction gearbox with interface plate, and cable and connectors.
  • Smear grease on the drive output shaft. The drive pushes over the splined output shaft of the bevelhead or gearbox and is fixed with two M10 bolts (2 helicoiled M10 holes, through hole optional).
  • Do a steering check before securing the drive; keep clear of moving steering parts and guard them in normal use.

Connecting to the Course Computer

  • Switch off the power supply first.
  • Drive motor: two single-core black cables twisted as a pair in sleeving. Clutch: two-core cable, brown (+) and blue (–).
  • Measure the total run to the course computer and size the motor cable from the recommended cable size table; at least 1.5mm2 (14 AWG) copper for the clutch.
  • Join with suitably rated connectors or junction boxes; route following the EMC guidelines.
  • At the course computer: CLUTCH brown to +ve, blue to –ve; MOTOR cables to either terminal at this stage.

The recommended cable size table is shown as printed (the HP headings in the source are partly illegible).

Post Installation Checks

  • Drive secured to a substantial structure.
  • Motor and clutch cables correctly routed and connected.
  • Hand-steer hardover to hardover: the drive must not impede steering.
  • Then complete the autopilot steering check in the course computer handbook.

Maintenance

  • Every 6 months: check all connections and mountings are secure, and cables for wear or damage.
