One row per winch size: deck unit part numbers, the motor/gearbox, and the circuit breaker and control gear Lewmar specifies for it. Maximum loads are recommended maximum safe working loads, with a margin for dynamic surges in extreme sea conditions.

Safe working loads for hydraulic winches are lower than for hand-operated winches because the input torque is much higher.

Hoses and Ports

  • Hydraulic system installation is not covered in this manual; hoses and connectors are not supplied.
  • Use reinforced braid hose to SAE100R7 or ISO D1S3949 for the motor A and B ports.
  • Hose size: up to 15 m (50 ft) 12 mm (1/2"); over 15 m (50 ft) 16 mm (5/8"). Minimum bend radius 150 mm (6").
  • Safe working pressure: see the performance graphs.
  • Lewmar hydraulic motor ports A & B: 1/2" BSP. Hydraulic drive unit case drains do not need to be fitted.
  • Keep everything clean: dirt in the system impairs safe operation and wears the hydraulic components.

With an Autoshift Commander unit, winches 68–111 may need only one deck switch; Ocean 46–64 (as printed) and EVO 45–65 are single-switch only.

Installation

Electric Conversion Kit

Ocean Wavespring manual winches built from 1992 on, and EVO manual winches, convert to electric with a kit of centre stem (A) and power drive base (B); add a suitable Lewmar motor/gearbox (C).

To convert: remove the winch, replace the centre stem with the kit stem, reassemble, fit the power drive base to the centre stem and mount the motor/gearbox.

Planning the Position

  • Allow 360° rotation of the winch handle.
  • Rope should enter the drum at –5° to –10° to the base axis; a base wedge may be needed.
  • Mount on an even surface. Place the output gear in the best position relative to the load and the sheet entry.
  • Check deck, hull and bulkhead clearance for the motor/gearbox or hydraulic drive before cutting. The motor/gearbox rotates in 90° steps.
  • Motor rotation is factory set. Fitted the wrong way round, a single-speed winch will not run and clicks; a 2- or 3-speed winch loses a lot of performance.
  • Winches 40–65: drill a Ø64 mm hole for the centre stem, strip the winch and mark the bolt holes through the base plate. Winches 68–111: remove the drum and mark through the holes in the base of the centre stem.
  • Place the deck switches near the winch and in view of it.

Fitting a Winch (40–65)

  • Isolate the winch at the breaker/isolator.
  • Unscrew the top cap anti-clockwise. Ocean 40: remove feeder arm and collets; Ocean 46–111: remove the feeder arm; EVO: turn the drum until the cutout in the upper crown is opposite the collets.
  • Lift off the drum (the drum washer refits with the bevel on the underside).
  • Remove the centre stem screws and lever the stem off the two dowel pins with a flat screwdriver in the drainage slots, holding the gear stack together. If the pawl gear falls away, it goes back shoulder face down.
  • Remove the base plate cover, bed the base with a light coat of sealant (not a permanent adhesive such as 5200) and bolt it down with countersunk heads. Let silicone-type sealant cure before final tightening.
  • Refit the centre stem, turning the gears to re-engage pawls and ratchet tracks; refit drum, collets, feeder arm and top cap.

Deck Fastenings

Not supplied. Use CSK head bolts with stainless washers and locknuts. Bolt length = deck thickness + (x).

  • Thick decks or a larger motor-to-deck distance ("T") need an extension kit, to special order.
  • Optional "FAST FIT" studs screw into the winch base without removing the drum.

Motor/Gearbox and Hydraulic Coupling

  • Electric 40–65: fit the base motor coupling and isolation shim with Loctite on the coupling bolts (#15, B0678 × 5) at 21 Nm. Grease the drive shaft, check the drive key, slide the motor/gearbox on and bolt it with Loctite at 43 Nm.
  • Electric 68–77: coupling motor bolts with Loctite at 43 Nm; grease the drive shaft, check the key, fit the motor/gearbox at 43 Nm.
  • Hydraulic 46–65: base motor coupling and shim with Loctite at 21 Nm; grease the splined input shaft, fit the motor at 43 Nm.
  • Hydraulic 68–111: grease the motor input shaft, fit the motor, coupling bolts with Loctite at 43 Nm.
