Gipsy Selection
- Rope/chain gipsies haul rope and chain without transferring from drum to gipsy; ideal for rope rodes with a chain tail. Use three strand nylon.
- RC172 suits 12 mm (1/2") rope; RC162 and RC152 suit 16 mm (5/8") rope; all may take ±3 mm (1/8") depending on lay.
- Gipsies 180 and 181 handle chain only.

American Cable
| Voltage | Cable length | AWG |
|---|---|---|
| 12 V | 35 ft | 4 |
| 12 V | 56 ft | 2 |
| 12 V | 71 ft | 1 |
| 12 V | 89 ft | 1/0 |
| 24 V | 69 ft | 6 |
| 24 V | 110 ft | 4 |
| 24 V | 176 ft | 2 |
- Cable length is the total run battery → windlass → battery along the cable route, not the length of the boat.
- Voltage drop due to cable should not exceed 5%: roughly 0.5 V on 12 V, 1.0 V on 24 V.
- Control circuits: 2.5 mm² (35/0.30 or 50/0.25 PVC), American equivalent 14 AWG.
Fitting to Deck
- Package: windlass, rode management module, mounting studs, nuts & washers, operating handle, torque key, mounting template D1009-2, instruction booklet D1010-3.
- Tools: 11 mm (7/16") and 18 mm (45/64") drills, 17 mm A/F (11/16") spanner; jig saw or trepanning tool optional.
- Fit a mounting pad on cambered decks; reinforce thin, foam or balsa decks.
- Rode should lead horizontally from the stemhead roller to the top of the gipsy, along its centre line. Leave room to work the handle.
- Standard M10 studs suit deck and packing up to 70 mm (2 3/4").
- Tape the template down. Drill four 11 mm stud holes and one 18 mm motor cable hole, kept inside the base contact area (solid black line).
- Cut the rode hole; seal fresh cut edges with silicone. Screw the studs in with two locked nuts.
- Seal round the base sealing face and inside the black seals; let silicone cure before final tightening.
Wiring
- Use a two-cable, fully insulated return system; check polarity.
- Mount solenoids as close to the battery as possible.
- Overload protection is required: a manually reset breaker, dry and accessible (see accessories).
- Use crimp terminals on all wire ends.
- More than one control switch: wire them in parallel.
- In-line control fuse (single direction): 12 V – 5 Amp, 24 V – 3.15 Amp.
- Wrong rotation, single direction: swap the thick cables at the windlass leads. Reversing: swap the UP and DOWN wires at the reversing solenoid box.
- Install to USCG, AYBC and NMMA requirements.
Clutch & Letting Go
- The operating handle (part 80) works the clutch: push forwards (clockwise) to release, pull back (anticlockwise) to tighten. Hold the gipsy pawl (part 4) engaged while tightening. Always remove the handle after use.
- Under power: engage the gipsy pawl, check the clutch is tight, disengage the pawl, release any anchor lock, press Down.
- Under gravity: as above, then push the handle forwards on the clutch nut to release; move it back or forth to control the descent; re-tighten and remove the handle.
- Lying to anchor: do not leave the windlass taking the load; fit a bridle or make the rode fast to a bollard or sampson post.
Hauling & Emergency
- Hauling: tighten the clutch operating nut (part 58) with the handle, clear the bridle, press Up, then secure the anchor independently.
- Warping: engage the gipsy pawl if the gipsy is in use, slacken the clutch, power up. More turns on the drum cure slippage.
- Emergency manual hauling: tighten the clutch nut, slacken screw (part 57, left hand thread) at least one turn with the torque key (part 107), put the flat end of the handle in a slot on the operating socket (part 10) and pump. Re-tighten screw 57 anticlockwise when done.
- Use the engine to motor towards the anchor during recovery, but not over and beyond it.
Maintenance
General
- Isolate electrically before any work.
- Re-check the mounting nuts after the first two or three recoveries.
- Wash down with fresh water. Keep salt off the clutch cones and their seats.
- Check electrical connections for corrosion; clean and lightly grease.
- Geartrain is lubricated with SFG 100 (white synthetic grease with PTFE); strip, clean and re-grease outside the main case at least annually.
- Tools: operating handle, flat screwdriver, 3 mm and 5 mm A/F torque keys, 10 mm A/F spanner, 13 mm and 17 mm A/F sockets, 15 mm A/F box spanner, circlip pliers.
- Winter: check below deck for water ingress round the studs and motor wire hole; reseal if needed.
Strip-Down Notes
- Gipsy: remove nut 58 and screw 57 (both left hand, turn clockwise to undo), set aside friction cone 22, pull the handle socket off, remove bolt 46 and washer 47 (13 mm) holding the fleming support; hold the gipsy carrier on the mainshaft as the gipsy comes off.
- Drum: prise off drum cap 122, remove bolt 128 and washer 125 (17 mm), pull off drum 123 and key 124. Grease bore and key on re-assembly.
- Handle socket: remove retaining ring 34 from ratchet drive cone 11 to reach the ratchet pawls 20.
- Do not lose the three drive rollers 21 between drive pawl carrier and mainshaft. Check mainshaft seal 30; replacing it means removing the drum and geartrain cover 3.
- Pawl springs have a right way: the bent-back tang lies against the inside face of the pawl.
- Motor: remove motor cover 2 and geartrain cover 3 (5 mm key), disconnect cables 37 (10 mm), withdraw first compound gear 116/118, remove the four motor screws 39, loosen grub screw 44 (3 mm) and pull pinion 117/119, keeping Woodruff key 48.
- O-ring seals 31 and 32: a few spots of super glue hold them on the covers during assembly.
