RC172 Rope/Chain Gipsy
- Hauls rope and chain without moving the rode from drum to gipsy – made for rope-to-chain-tail rodes.
- Rope: good-quality, medium-lay three-strand nylon. Designed for 14 mm (9/16"); may accept ±3 mm (1/8") depending on lay. Never use multiplait.

Joining rope to chain
- Seize the rope 300 mm (12") from the end and unlay.
- Pass one strand through the end link from one side, the other two from the opposite side.
- Remove the seizing and back-splice two full tucks; pare strands by a third with a hot knife and tuck twice more; pare another third and finish with two tucks; cut the tails.
- Check the splice regularly and remake it at any sign of wear.
Installation
Package and requirements
- Package: above-deck assembly, motor & gearbox, studs/washers/nuts, chain pipe sleeve, safety instructions D1000-3, warning label D1008-2, manual D1053, mounting template D1054.
- You also need: a standard sheet winch handle; flat screwdriver; 9.5 mm (3/8") drill; jigsaw, trepanning tool or ø51 mm (2") and ø60 mm (2 3/8") hole saws; rasps/files; 13 mm AF spanner; crimping pliers.
- Marine sealant, breaker/isolator, control switch(es), solenoid (single direction) or reversing solenoid box, cable and crimp terminals.
Fitting to deck
- Use a pad on a cambered deck; thin, foam or balsa decks need a backing piece. Top and bottom faces must be parallel.
- Check the rode lines up with the stemhead roller and drops into the locker, and that a winch handle can turn fully on the clutch. The rode must enter the gipsy on its centre plane – angle the pad if needed – with enough vertical fall to clear the gipsy with a full locker.
- Cut the holes from the template, check the chain pipe fits square and seal the cut edges.
- Studs are 100 mm (4") long for decks/pads up to 70 mm (2 3/4"); cut them down for thinner decks. Screw them into the baseplate with two lock-nutted nuts.
- Seal the chain-pipe flange top and locate it on the baseplate pegs; seal the baseplate underside, pad and studs; place the windlass.
- Grease the mainshaft below deck, offer up the gearbox and tighten onto the studs. With silicone-type sealants, let them cure before final tightening.
Wiring

|---|---|---|
| 9.2 | 30 | 20 |
| 12.8 | 42 | 25 |
| 17.7 | 58 | 35 |
| 19.7 | 64 | 40 |
| 24.0 | 79 | 50 |
| Cable length (ft) | American cable (AWG) |

| 56 | 2 |
| 71 | 1 |
| 89 | 1/0 |
Length is battery to windlass and back along the cable route – not boat length. Keep voltage drop under 5% (about 0.5 V on 12 V). Control circuits: 1.5 mm² (21/0.30, US 14 AWG). Use a two-cable insulated-return system; a breaker/isolator is mandatory, mounted dry and reachable; solenoids dry and close to the battery; crimp every wire end; wire multiple control switches in parallel.
High-load foot switch only
Single direction with solenoid
Power reversing
If the windlass runs the wrong way: single direction – swap the power cables at the motor; reversing – swap the UP and DOWN wires at the solenoid box. Pressing UP and DOWN together stops the windlass when wired to the S-L reversing box.

Operation
- Clutch: insert the sheet winch handle in the clutch nut (gipsy/drum) or the offset bi-square hole (gipsy only). Anticlockwise disengages, clockwise engages and brakes. Remove the handle when not in use.
- Letting go under gravity: slacken the clutch until the gipsy turns; use the handle as a brake; fully tighten when enough rode is out.
- Under power (reversing installations): clutch fully tight, press DOWN. If it turns but does not pay out, check for a jam in the chain pipe.
- Hauling in: clutch tight, press UP; inch the anchor home. If it stalls, switch off and wait a few seconds; check the breaker. Never let it stall for more than a few seconds.
- Warping (gipsy/drum only): tie off the rode, slacken the clutch nut, add turns on the drum to stop slipping. Never put chain on the drum.
- Lie to a bridle, cleat or bollard, not the windlass; hold the rode on a chain stopper in heavy weather and secure the anchor independently under way.
Maintenance
- Isolate electrically first. After the first two or three recoveries re-check the deck fastenings.
- Keep salt off the clutch and gipsy; wash with fresh water. The gearbox is lubricated for life; run the windlass occasionally. A few drops of oil on external moving parts.
- Check electrical connections for corrosion; clean and lightly grease.
- At least yearly, strip the above-deck parts, clean, apply a little marine-grade Teflon grease to bearing surfaces and pack grease inside and around the deck seal (part 86).
- Winter: check for water between deck housing and deck; if found, remove, clean and reseal. Anchor wells with lids corrode faster – keep up motor and gearbox care.
