Gypsy & Rode Compatibility

Gypsy kit 68001024 takes 6–7 mm / 1/4" chain spliced to 12 mm (1/2") 3-strand or 8-plait rope.

Cable Sizing

Size by total run: battery → windlass → battery. Don't confuse cable run with boat length.

19–24 m (61–80 ft) 25 mm² · 4 AWG

Mounting

  • Standard 8 mm (5/16") studs suit deck + packing up to 76 mm (3").
  • Thin, foam or balsa-cored decks need reinforcement to spread the load.
  • Lead the rode horizontally from the bow roller onto the top of the gypsy, on its centerline.
  • Leave enough vertical fall into the locker, even when it's full.

Servicing Schedule

Regularly

  • Wash down with fresh water.
  • Check electrical connections for corrosion; clean and lightly grease.
  • Keep the anchor locker drain clear so no water reaches the motor/gearbox.
  • Inspect the gypsy (high-wear item); smear grease on the cone contact surfaces on reassembly.
  • Re-check mounting studs after the first few recoveries.

Annually

  • Inspect electric cables; repair or renew.
  • Strip above-deck components, clean and lightly grease.
  • Check motor/gearbox for corrosion; repaint with marine oil-based enamel.
  • Remove the motor cover and blow dust off the brushes.

Never leave the fall-safe pawl carrying the rode at anchor. Take the load on a chain stopper, cleat or samson post.
