Electrical
| Motor | Battery | Cable | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700 W 12 V | 100 Ah | 25 mm² / 3 AWG | 70 A |
| 700 W 24 V | 70 Ah | 16 mm² / 4 AWG | 35 A |
| 1000 W 12 V | 150 Ah | 35 mm² / 2 AWG | 100 A |
| 1000 W 24 V | 90 Ah | 25 mm² / 3 AWG | 70 A |
Increase cable section by about 30% – 50% if the total positive plus negative run exceeds 10 m (29' as printed). Control wiring 1.5 mm² / 16 AWG; protect the remote controls with a 5 A breaker. Breaker ratings refer to the Lofrans breaker.
Installation
Before You Drill
- Tools: Ø9 mm (3/8") drill, 10 mm and 13 mm A/F spanners, jig saw, silicone sealant.
- Standard maximum deck thickness 40 mm (1 9/16"); thicker decks: ask your dealer.
- Thin decks need a plywood or timber backing pad. Do not use a stainless steel backing pad (electrolysis).
- Steel or aluminium boats: insulate top and under-deck parts from the deck with a non-conductive gasket.
- Top and under-deck parts must be parallel; misalignment costs power and overheats the motor.
- Leave at least 400 mm (16") between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain.
Fitting
- Place it over the deepest part of the chain locker, chain parallel to the deck with about 180° wrap on the gipsy.
- Drill with the supplied template. Separate top and under-deck parts by undoing nuts (227) from studs (292).
- Seal the base bottom and around the studs with silicone, set the top part on deck.
- Under-deck part can face any of four positions (motor adjustable every 90°); keep the motor out of the chain run.
- Engage key (284) of the main shaft in the gearbox keyway and tighten the nuts.
- Wrong direction? Swap M1 and M2 at the control box. Re-check the nuts after first use.

Using It
- Clutch: handle in the clutch nut (273) or gipsy cap (285), clockwise to engage, counter-clockwise to release.
- Raise: engine running, clutch engaged, handle out, hold UP. Do not use the windlass to pull the boat to the anchor.
- Breaker trips: wait a few minutes before resetting; if it trips again, make the chain fast and break the anchor out with the engine.
- Lower: electrically with DOWN, or free-fall by releasing the clutch and braking with the gipsy cap.
- Drum: secure the chain, release the clutch, two clockwise turns of rope round the drum, hold UP while tailing.
- Emergency: handle in the clutch nut or gipsy cap, turn clockwise against spring (301); there is no gear ratio, so it is hard work.
Safety
- The windlass is not a strong point: make the rode fast to a cleat, bollard or chain stopper when lying at anchor.
- Engage the chain stopper after anchoring and while under way; turn the breaker off during navigation.
- Do not exceed the windlass rating; use the engine to help recover the anchor.
- Fit at least two remote controls in case one fails.
- Install the control box in a dry place; the motor tolerates spray but can be ruined if submerged.
Maintenance
- Monthly: wash off the salt layer with fresh water, especially in hidden corners.
- Every six months: strip the gipsy, clean, check for electrolysis, spray with CRC 3097 "Long Life" or WD40 and grease the main shaft thread.
- Standard: unscrew (273) with the handle, remove (274, 275), unscrew (217), remove (288, 289), remove (276), extract (277).
- Low profile: unscrew (285), remove (286), unscrew (217), remove (288, 289), remove (276), extract (277).
- Yearly: lift the windlass off the deck and clean the salt from under the base.
- Oil leak from the gearbox: replace the seals (complete seal kit available).
- Start and end of season: clean motor and control box and grease the terminals. After long lay-up, check the motor brushes.
