Cable sizes are for the total run, positive plus negative.

  • Control box (solenoids): delayed-intervention type, rated as in the table, mounted in a dry place near the windlass.
  • Circuit breakers: use the Lofrans breakers, selected for their trip curve rather than a plain rating.
  • Remote control panel: mount where the operator can see the windlass during the manoeuvre (deck, helm or cockpit) and seal it so the terminals stay dry.

Before You Drill

  • In the box: windlass with motor/gearbox, remote control switch or reverser box, drilling template, handle, screws.
  • Tools: drill, 10 mm bit for wood and steel, 10 mm, 13 mm and 17 mm hex keys.
  • Bow roller height must keep the chain inclination below 90 degrees (as printed).
  • The deck faces must be parallel; shim if they are not.
  • With all the chain stowed, leave at least 300 mm between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain.
  • Aluminium boats: insulate the windlass from the deck with a non-conductive gasket (not supplied), and insulate anchor, chain, locker and fixings from the hull.

Deck Installation

  • Place the drilling template on deck, aligned with the bow.
  • Mark and drill. Leave the hole edges sharp, but radius the forward edge of the chain hole at 45°.
  • Set the upper part of the windlass on deck and connect the battery leads to the motor.
  • Seal the base to the deck with silicone.

Operation

Lowering

  • Electrically: clutch tight, brake off, chain stoppers off; switch on the safety switch, press DOWN; switch off and re-engage the stoppers.
  • By gravity: clutch tight, stopper and brake off, then ease the clutch with the handle. Clockwise brakes the chain (to a full stop), anticlockwise lets it run.
  • A fully released clutch drops the anchor at high speed and can damage the hood and bow roller: control the speed.
  • Wait for the windlass to stop before reversing direction.

Recovery, Drum and Override

  • Breaker on, clutch tight, brake off, handle removed, stoppers off; press UP until the anchor seats in the bow roller, then breaker off and chain on the stopper.
  • Run the engine or generator while recovering; do not rely on the batteries alone.
  • If the breaker trips on overload, reset it and wait some minutes before running again. It does not protect the motor from overheating on long runs.
  • Warping drum: brake on, clutch off (drum turns independently of the gipsy), three turns clockwise, press UP.
  • Manual override: clutch engaged, brake and stoppers off, handle in the hand-wheel and turn clockwise against the reducer spring.

Never use the windlass as a mooring point or strong point at anchor: hold the load on a chain stopper.

Maintenance Programme

Use of the yacht Less than 2 months From 2 up to 6 More than 6 Charter
Every 3 months A – A (as printed) A – B A – B
Every 6 months A – B
Every 12 months A – B – C C C C – D
Every 24 months D D E
Every 36 months D – E E E
  • A – Rinse all surfaces and hidden points with fresh water and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Razza: no chlorine, bleach or acid on the stainless; polish the stainless parts.
  • B – Grease the rotating parts, especially the main shaft threads and clutch cones; check for corrosion and mechanical stress. Razza: anti-seize on the thread of the #730 conic screw (M10×30).
  • C – Check the motor terminals and test the voltage drop at the terminals.
  • D – Replace all gaskets.
  • E – Remove the windlass from the deck, clean the salt from under the base and re-seal.

Gipsy Service

  • Turn anticlockwise with the handle to remove the gipsy.
  • Slide off the upper clutch cone, gipsy and lower clutch cone.
  • Wash with running water, never pressure-wash, and check for corrosion or stress.
  • Reassemble in reverse order, greasing threads and moving parts.

Disconnect power before any maintenance. Skipping the programme voids the warranty.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible cause Solution
Windlass does not run when a control is operated Protection switch OFF Set the switch to ON
Low voltage in the system Check battery charge and connections
Control box failure Check and if needed replace the control box
Control failure Check and if needed replace the control
Motor failure Measure motor voltage; if OK, check and clean the brushes; if it still fails, replace the motor
Chain jams frequently Chain locker not deep enough for the chain carried Fit the windlass over the deepest point of the locker or carry less chain
Chain does not suit the gipsy Change the gipsy
Chain not calibrated Check the chain; if out of tolerance, replace it
Protection switch trips often Switch is not a delayed-response type Change the protection switch
Windlass turns slowly Cable section too small Increase cable section
Deck faces not parallel Shim to make them parallel
Bad electrical connections Check connections
Dirty brushes Clean brushes
Water in the motor Replace the motor

Spare Parts

Dorado and Kobra lists use item numbers keyed to the exploded views; only the seal, fastener, key and circlip kits carry Lofrans codes. Kit letters show which kit includes each part.

Dimensions & Drilling Templates

Dorado

Kobra

Razza

Using the Templates

  • Dorado: three Ø10 mm (3/8") holes; one cut-out area is marked for the 700 W motor only.
  • Kobra: four Ø11 mm (7/16") holes; the separate Kobra deck template is in the downloads.
  • Razza: three Ø10 mm holes.
  • Print the template pages from the PDF at actual size (1:1) and measure the printed dimensions before cutting the deck. The Razza template and the separate Kobra deck template both warn that a print may not be to scale.
