In the Box & Planning

  • Drum winch with motor and gearbox filled with oil, ready for use; control box, rocker switch, circuit breaker; fixing hardware; 316 stainless steel backing plate.
  • Rode (if part of the kit): 70 m of 12 mm nylon three-strand rope attached to 8 m of 6 mm chain.
  • Tools: drill, metric sockets and wrench, waterproof thread sealant and marine sealant.
  • The gearbox and motor can be rotated to different mounting positions: loosen the flange nuts, turn the motor, retighten.
  • The operator at the Up/Down switch must see the anchor. A second switch can be wired in parallel off the control box.
  • Angled or curved deck: make a shaped mounting block so the winch sits level and the load spreads.
  • Aluminium and steel hulls: insulate the winch, bolts, washers and backing plate from the deck with a non-conductive gasket (not supplied).

Mounting & Rode

  • Mount the control box in a dry place, as close as possible to the winch (voltage drop under 10%).
  • Mount the breaker as close as possible to the positive battery terminal; take the winch negative to the common negative point, not the battery pole.
  • Seal drilled holes; seal exposed fibreglass or timber with epoxy, rust-proof steel plate. Fit the backing plate under the mount.
  • Leave at least one metre between the last roller and the winch; use a guide roller or hawse pipe inside a rope locker.
  • Attach the rope end firmly to the drum, test Up and Down for one or two seconds each, then wind the rode on with Up.
  • Rope and chain wrapped on the drum must not rise over the edges of the drum side plates.
  • Isolate the winch at the breaker when finished, and amend the boat's compliance plate for the added anchor weight.

Electrical System

Motor (W) Voltage (V) Contactor (A) 0–5 m 5–10 m 10–15 m 15–20 m 0–15 ft 15–30 ft 30–50 ft 50–65 ft
800 12 70 16 mm² 25 mm² 25 mm² 35 mm² 6 AWG 4 AWG 4 AWG 2 AWG
1000 12 100 16 mm² 25 mm² 35 mm² 50 mm² 6 AWG 4 AWG 2 AWG 1 AWG
  • Cable lengths are positive plus negative. Insulation rated at least 90°C; maximum voltage drop 10%. Marine-grade, fully tinned wire only.
  • Control box (solenoids): dry place near the winch, no direct water contact.
  • Use the Lofrans breakers: they are selected for their trip curve, not a plain plate rating.
  • The wiring diagrams show a rocker switch type C with the 800 W (2-terminal) motor and the Thetis 1002 hand-held remote with the 1000 W (3-terminal) motor.
  • After wiring, check drum rotation; swap the control-box cables at the motor terminals to reverse it.

Operation

Lowering

  • Release the rope from the cleat or security line and inspect anchor and winch.
  • Breaker on, engine idling; hold Down until the line goes slack (anchor on the bottom).
  • Idle astern, keep tension on the rope so the anchor digs in, and do not overrun the rope coming off the drum.
  • Pay out more rope while reversing to the position you want.

Raising

  • Engine on, idle forward while pressing Up periodically so the rope winds cleanly. Do not use the winch to pull the boat up to the anchor.
  • Over the anchor, neutral, then winch it up. Jog the switch for the final lift and go slowly with the last five metres of chain.
  • If the anchor jams in the bowsprit, take the load off the gearbox with Down.
  • Tie the anchor line to a cleat when unattended, overnight, in heavy weather, cruising or trailering.

Never stand between the load and the winch, never guide the rope onto the drum by hand, and keep everyone at least one metre away when power is applied.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible cause Solution
Winch does not work when a control is operated Breaker OFF; low voltage; control box, switch or motor failure Set breaker ON; check battery and connections; check/replace control box or switch; measure motor voltage, clean brushes, else replace motor
Runs slowly, trips the breaker Poor connections; dirty brushes; water in the motor Check connections; clean brushes; replace the motor
Gearbox has lost oil (Service) remove the gearbox, find the leak, replace damaged parts, gaskets and screws; check the motor
Motor strains in one or both directions (Service) check all power cable connections, then remove the motor and check/replace the brushes
Works in one direction only Check 12V between A1–C and A2–C on the control box with the buttons pressed; if a relay does not work, replace the control box
Anchor oversized or too heavy Use a lighter anchor (see working load)
Angle too steep between hawse pipe/guide roller and drum Reposition or add a guide roller for a smoother lead
Motor runs, drum does not turn Worn or broken wormwheel/worm teeth; broken motor shaft; broken or missing key (Service) replace broken parts and check for debris in the oil; replace motor; replace key and worn parts
Anchor or rode jams on the bowsprit Lifting too fast; hawse pipe or component undersized Jog the Up switch; replace the undersized component

Maintenance Programme

Use of the yacht Less than 2 months From 2 up to 6 More than 6 Charter
Every 3 months A – B A – B
Every 6 months A A – B
Every 12 months B – C C C C – D
Every 24 months D D E
Every 36 months D – E E E
  • A – Rinse with fresh water and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge; no chlorine, bleach or acid; polish the stainless parts; check for corrosion and stress.
  • B – Grease the main shaft section that enters the gearbox with non-conductive yellow marine grease.
  • C – Check the motor terminals and the voltage drop at the terminals (max 10%).
  • D – Check and replace all gearbox oil seals.
  • E – Remove the winch from the deck, clean the salt under the base, replace all gaskets and re-seal.
  • Gearbox: factory-filled with long-life synthetic oil, replaced only after a leak or overhaul. SAE 90–SAE 140; 0,3 L for the 1000 W and 0,15 L for the 800 W.
  • Motor and gearbox are IP67, but wash winch and rode after use; check rope and chain for cuts and abrasion; soak the rope in warm water and fabric softener every 12 months.
  • Laid up: run the winch every three months. Use a close-fitting cover and a light spray of lanolin after washing.

Disconnect power before any maintenance. Only authorised repair centres may open the motor or gearbox; skipping the programme voids the warranty (5 years limited).
