Lofrans Leopard Windlass — Mounting, Operation & Maintenance

Electrical Plant

Motor Min. battery Cable section Circuit breaker
1200 W 12 V 180 Ah 50 mm² / 0 AWG 100 A
1200 W 24 V 100 Ah 25 mm² / 3 AWG 70 A
1500 W 12 V 250 Ah 50 mm² / 0 AWG 125 A
1500 W 24 V 150 Ah 35 mm² / 2 AWG 70 A

Wiring Rules

  • Values refer to Lofrans circuit breakers only.
  • Increase cable section by about 30%–50% when the positive plus negative run is over 10 m (29').
  • Control wiring (thin line on the diagram): about 1.5 mm² / 16 AWG.
  • Fit a 5 A breaker to protect the remote controls.
  • Mount the breaker dry, accessible and visible. Install at least two remote controls.
  • If the windlass runs the wrong way, swap M1 and M2 at the control box.

Chain Gipsies Available

  • Ø8 ISO – 8 DIN 766
  • Ø3/8" BBB
  • Ø5/16" G40
  • Ø3/8" G40
  • Ø10 ISO
  • Ø12 ISO (Leopard only)
  • Ø3/8" DIN 766 – 10 DIN 766

Installation

  • Tools: Ø9 mm (3/8") drill, 10 mm and 13 mm A/F spanners, jig saw, power drill, silicone sealant.
  • Top part (drum, gipsy, base) above deck; gearbox and motor below. Leave room to work the handle.
  • Standard maximum deck thickness 70 mm (2 3/4"); thicker decks, consult your dealer.
  • Thin or weak decks need a plywood or timber backing pad. Do not use a stainless steel pad (electrolysis).
  • Steel or aluminium boats: insulate top and under-deck parts with a non-conductive gasket.
  • Top and under-deck parts must be parallel; misalignment overloads and overheats the motor.

Positioning & Assembly

  • Place it over the deepest part of the chain locker, chain running parallel to the deck and wrapping about 180° round the gipsy.
  • Leave at least 400 mm (16") between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain.
  • Drill using the template supplied. Separate the parts by loosening nuts (227) from studs (533); seal the base bottom and round the studs.
  • The under-deck unit can face any of four positions; keep the motor clear of the chain run.
  • Join the under-deck part by engaging key (450) on the main shaft in the gearbox keyway; tighten the nuts.
  • After first use, check the nuts again.

Clutch & Anchoring

  • Gipsy clutch: insert the handle in the clutch nut (273) or gipsy cap (530); clockwise to tighten fully, anticlockwise to free.
  • Raising: engine running, clutch engaged, handle removed, press UP. Do not use the windlass to pull the boat to the anchor.
  • If the Lofrans breaker trips, wait some minutes before resetting; if it trips again, make the chain fast and use the engine.
  • Free fall: release the clutch and control the drop by tightening the gipsy cap. Normally lower under power with DOWN.
  • Once anchored, use the chain stopper and/or a rope to a strong point. Switch the breaker OFF and engage the stopper under way.

Drum & Emergency

  • Drum only: secure the chain, release the clutch, take two turns clockwise round the drum, press UP while tailing. Re-engage the clutch after.
  • Emergency: handle in the clutch nut or gipsy cap, turn clockwise against spring (541). There is no ratio, so deep anchoring is hard work.
  • The windlass is not a strong point: fasten the rode to a cleat, bollard or chain stopper when lying at anchor.
  • Keep hands, feet and fingers clear of a running windlass; turn the circuit off before clearing a jam.

Maintenance

  • Monthly: wash off the salt layer with fresh water, including hidden spots.
  • At least every six months: dismantle the top part, clean and check everything, spray with CRC 3097 "Long Life" or WD40, check for electrolysis and grease the main shaft thread.
  • After long inactivity the motor may run slowly: check and clean the brushes, replace if needed.
  • At least once a year: remove the windlass from the deck and clean the salt from under the base.
  • The gearbox is filled with SAE 90 long-life oil. An oil leak means the seals must be replaced; a complete seal set (Kit A) is available.
  • Start and end of season: check motor and control box and grease the terminals.
  • When ordering spares give the model classification, serial number, item number and quantity.
