Specifications & Electrics
| Motor | Min. battery | Cable section | Circuit breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700 W 12 V | 100 Ah | 25 mm² / 3 AWG | 70 A |
| 700 W 24 V | 70 Ah | 16 mm² / 4 AWG | 35 A |
| 1000 W 12 V | 150 Ah | 35 mm² / 2 AWG | 100 A |
| 1000 W 24 V | 90 Ah | 25 mm² / 3 AWG | 70 A |
- Gipsy: Ø8 ISO / DIN 766 and 5/16" G40 / BBB chain; rope Ø14–16 mm (9/16"–5/8").
- Increase cable section by about 30%–50% if the total positive plus negative run exceeds 10 m (29', as printed).
- Control wiring (thin lines on the diagram): about 1.5 mm² / 16 AWG, protected by a 5 A breaker.
- Breaker ratings refer to Lofrans breakers only. Fit it dry, accessible and visible; isolate windlass and remotes when under way.
- Lofrans recommends at least two remote controls in case one is damaged.
Mounting
- Tools: 9 mm (3/8") drill, 10 mm and 13 mm A/F spanners, jig saw, power drill, silicone sealant.
- Top part: drum (274), gipsy (512), base (518). Under deck: gearbox (305) and motor (315).
- Standard maximum deck thickness 40 mm (1 9/16"); thicker decks: consult your dealer. Back thin decks with plywood or timber, never a stainless pad.
- Steel or aluminium boats: insulate top and under-deck parts from the deck with a non-conductive gasket.
- Top and under-deck parts must be parallel, or the motor overloads and overheats.
- Lofrans suggests mounting on a removable bolted deck panel for easier maintenance.
Chain Locker & Assembly
- Place the windlass over the deepest part of the locker; chain runs parallel to the deck and wraps about 180° on the gipsy.
- Leave at least 400 mm (16") from the underside of the deck to the top of the heaped chain.
- Drill from the supplied template. Separate the parts at nuts (227) and studs (292); seal the base bottom and around the studs.
- The under-deck unit can face any of four positions. Engage the main-shaft key (284) in the gearbox keyway, tighten the nuts, connect the motor.
- Wrong direction: swap M1 and M2 at the control box. Re-check the nuts after the first use.
- The motor tolerates spray but is ruined if submerged.
Operation
Clutch
- Standard: handle in the clutch nut (273), clockwise until tight to engage, anticlockwise to release.
- Low profile: release the lock nut (508) anticlockwise, then loosen the gipsy cap (519). Re-tighten the cap until the handle will not move, then re-engage the lock nut.
- Fast anchor drop: release the clutch and control the fall with the gipsy cap. Normally lower electrically with DOWN.
- Drum on its own: secure the chain on a stopper, release the clutch, take two clockwise turns of rope, press UP while tailing.
Raising & Emergency
- Run the engine, check the clutch is engaged, remove the handle, press UP. Never use the windlass to pull the boat to the anchor.
- If the Lofrans breaker trips on a stuck anchor, wait a few minutes before resetting; if it trips again, make the chain fast and break the anchor out with the engine.
- Emergency: handle in the clutch nut or gipsy cap, turn clockwise against spring (301). There is no reduction ratio, so deep anchoring is hard work.
- Use a chain stopper and a rope to a cleat at anchor; turn the breaker off and engage the stopper under way.
Maintenance
- Monthly: wash off the salt layer with fresh water, especially in hidden spots.
- Every six months, strip the gipsy. Standard: unscrew (273), remove (274, 275), unscrew (515), remove (516, 517), remove (275, 512), extract (513). Low profile: unscrew (508), remove (509, 510), unscrew (519), unscrew (515), remove (516, 517), remove (511, 512), extract (513).
- Clean and inspect, spray with CRC 3097 "Long Life" or WD40, check for electrolysis and grease the main-shaft thread.
- Yearly: lift the windlass off the deck and clean the salt from under the base.
- Gearbox is filled with SAE 90 long-life oil; an oil leak means replacing the seals (a full seal set is available).
- After long lay-ups check and clean the motor brushes. Grease the motor and control-box terminals at the start and end of the season.
