Mounting, operation and maintenance of the Lofrans Progress Two vertical windlass (1200 / 1500 W, 12 / 24 V): battery and cable sizing, clutch operation for each version, and the parts lists for drawings B.20.101A, B.20.102A and B.20.103A.

Model Classification & Electric Plant
Motors: 1200 W at 12 or 24 V, 1500 W at 12 or 24 V. Chain gipsies: Ø8 Iso / 8 Din 766 / Ø5/16" G40 / BBB, or Ø10 Iso / Ø3/8" G40. Rope: Ø14–16 mm (9/16"–5/8") or Ø16–18 mm (5/8"–3/4").
| Motor | Min. battery | Cable section | Circuit breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1200 W 12 V | 180 Ah | 50 mm² / 0 AWG | 100 A |
| 1200 W 24 V | 100 Ah | 25 mm² / 3 AWG | 70 A |
| 1500 W 12 V | 250 Ah | 50 mm² / 0 AWG | 125 A |
| 1500 W 24 V | 150 Ah | 35 mm² / 2 AWG | 70 A |
- Breaker values refer to Lofrans breakers only.
- Increase cable section by about 30–50% when the run (positive + negative) is over 10 m / 29'.
- Control wiring (thin lines on the diagram): about 1.5 mm² / 16 AWG, protected by a 5 A breaker.
- Mount the breaker dry, accessible and visible; mount the control box in a dry place; fit at least two remote controls.
- If the windlass runs the wrong way, swap M1 and M2 at the control box.
Installation
- Tools: Ø9 mm (3/8") drill, 10 mm and 13 mm A/F spanners, jig saw, power drill, silicone sealant.
- The top unit (drum, gipsy, base) sits on deck; gearbox and motor sit below. The motor tolerates spray but is ruined if submerged.
- Standard maximum deck thickness 70 mm (2 3/4"). Back a thin deck with plywood or timber – not a stainless pad (electrolysis).
- Steel or aluminium boats: insulate top and under-deck units from the deck with a non-conductive gasket. Both units must be parallel; use a mounting pad if needed.
- Place it over the deepest part of the chain locker, chain running parallel to the deck with about 180° wrap. Leave at least 400 mm (16") between deck underside and heaped chain.
- Drill with the supplied template, seal the base and studs with silicone, and orient the under-deck unit in any of four positions so the motor clears the chain fall.
- Engage the main shaft key in the gearbox keyway, tighten the stud nuts, and re-check them after first use.
- Leave room to swing the handle (272). Lofrans suggests mounting on a removable bolted panel for maintenance.
Clutch By Version
- Low Profile, B.20.101A: handle in the star slot of gipsy cap (530); anticlockwise frees, clockwise locks the clutch (553 / 549).
- Lockable clutch Low Profile, B.20.102A: first loosen lock nut (508), then the gipsy cap (558); re-tighten cap, then lock nut.
- B.20.103A: lock nut (508), then gipsy cap (519); clutch items 511 and 513 on main shaft 644.
- Standard (drum) versions: handle in clutch nut (273), clockwise to engage, anticlockwise to free.
Anchoring
- Run the boat's engine while recovering. Do not use the windlass to pull the boat up to the anchor.
- If the breaker trips on a stuck anchor, wait some minutes before retrying; if it trips again, make the chain fast and break the anchor out with the engine.
- Free-fall: release the clutch and control the drop with the gipsy cap. Normally lower electrically with DOWN.
- Drum only: secure the chain on a stopper, free the clutch, two turns of rope clockwise, press UP.
- Emergency: handle in the clutch nut or gipsy cap, turn clockwise against spring (541). There is no gearing, so deep anchorages are hard work.
- Use a chain stopper at anchor and while under way; switch the breaker off when sailing.
Maintenance & Ordering Parts
- At least monthly: wash off salt with fresh water, especially in hidden spots.
- At least every six months: strip the gipsy, clean and check all parts, spray with CRC 3097 "Long Life" or WD40, look for electrolysis and grease the main shaft thread.
- After a long lay-up the motor may run slowly: check and clean the brushes, replace if needed.
- At least yearly: lift the windlass off the deck and clean the salt from under the base.
- The gearbox is filled with SAE 90 long-life oil. If it leaks, strip and replace the seals (a complete seal set is available).
- Start and end of season: clean motor and control box and grease the terminals.
