Wiring Minimum Requirements

Component 1000 W 12V 1000 W 24V
Battery capacity 200 Ah 100 Ah
Power cable size 35 mm² – 2 AWG 25 mm² – 3 AWG
Lofrans circuit breaker (slow time/current curve) 100 A 70 A
Fuse 5 A 5 A
Control wire size 1,5 mm² – 14 AWG 1,5 mm² – 14 AWG
  • Smaller batteries cut performance and wear quickly.
  • Increase the cable size when positive plus negative run is over 25 m. Use marine-grade tinned copper.
  • Keep the breaker dry and reachable; use it to isolate the windlass from the remotes.
  • Wire all switches in parallel and fit at least two, in case one fails.

Requirements

  • Gipsy in line with the bow roller.
  • Flat deck, strong enough for the windlass pull; add a backing pad if needed.
  • Mount directly over the deepest part of the chain locker, with at least 12" between the underside of the deck and the top of the heaped chain.
  • Chain from the bow roller can be inclined up to 5 degrees.

Procedure

  • Position the template, mark and drill. Dress the forward edge of the chain hole at 45°, sand and seal all edges; fit the supplied deck gasket.
  • Loosen the 4 hex nuts (227) to split the topworks from gearbox and motor; set the topworks on deck.
  • Hang the lower unit on two opposing studs with washer, lock washer and nut, then engage the main-shaft key (284) in the gearbox keyway. Turn the motor away from the chain pipe.
  • Fit the remaining nuts, tighten everything and wire per the diagram.
  • Test with rope-chain in the gipsy (never run it empty, to protect the finger 905). If it runs backwards, swap the UP and DOWN wires at the control box. Re-check the nuts after first use.

Operation

Clutch

  • Low profile: release the lock nut (1094) with the handle (272) in the centre socket, turning clockwise. Then turn the gipsy cap (946) anticlockwise from the offset socket to free-fall.
  • To set tension, turn the offset socket clockwise until the handle stops (the anchor seated in the roller provides resistance), then lock the centre nut anticlockwise. Do not over-tension the lock nut.
  • Standard: loosen the clutch nut (912) with the handle to disengage; tighten until the handle will not move to engage.

Sequence

  • Lower electrically: stopper off, clutch on, breaker on, press DOWN.
  • After anchoring / under way: stopper on, clutch on, breaker off. Rope rodes go to a cleat.
  • Raise: stopper off, clutch on, breaker on, engine running; motor slowly toward the anchor. If the breaker trips, wait several minutes before resetting.
  • Drum: stopper on, breaker on, clutch off, 2–3 turns clockwise, press UP.
  • Manual emergency: stopper off, clutch on, breaker off; handle in 912 or 946, turn clockwise against the gearbox spring (924).

Maintenance Program

Yearly use of the boat Less than 2 months From 2 to 6 months Over 6 months Charter

Every 6 months A, B
Every 12 months A, B, C C C C, D
After 24 months D D E

  • A – Clean all outer surfaces and hidden points with fresh water to remove the salt layer.
  • B – Grease the outer rotating parts, especially the main shaft thread and the clutch cones; check for corrosion and stress.
  • C – Check the motor terminals and test the voltage drop at the terminals.
  • D – Replace all outer seals. The gearbox is filled with SAE 90 long-life oil.
  • E – Remove the windlass from the deck to clean the salt from under the base plate.

Removing the Finger

The finger (905) is for rope-chain. With all-chain rodes Lofrans suggests removing it to cut wear and noise, and fitting the plug (945).

  • Low profile: unlock 1094, unscrew 946. Standard: unscrew 912, remove 914. Then remove 915, 910 and 916.
  • Unscrew the two 907 and lift out 908.
  • Turn 908 over, unscrew 905 and 906, fit 945 and refit screw 293. Remove 909 from 904.
  • Refit 908 and the remaining parts.
