Before You Drill
- In the box: capstan with gearbox and motor, control box (VDC variants), QR code to the online library (manual and drilling template), fixing deck studs.
- Deck: solid, at least 60 mm thick; thicker decks need longer fixing studs.
- Conductive hulls: insulate the capstan from the deck with a non-conductive gasket (not supplied). With a 2-terminal motor, bond the capstan to the onboard cathodic protection.
- Deck template: Ø187 mm cut-out, Ø208 mm circle and 4 × Ø10 mm holes. Print at 1:1 and check the printed dimensions with a ruler before drilling.
Fitting
- Position the template, mark and drill.
- Thin bead of silicone between deck flange and deck along the outer edge; no permanent adhesive.
- Washers and four M10 nuts on the studs, 35–40 Nm, lubricated with anti-seize paste.
- Thin layer of non-conductive marine grease between deck flange and base.
- Lower the assembly through the deck with the motor terminals toward the cable access; mind the terminals and your fingers.
- Four M10 countersunk screws, 35–40 Nm with anti-seize.
- Wire the motor per the wiring diagram (PDF page 7) and keep motor and control box out of direct water.
Electrical System
| Motor (W) | Voltage (V) | Contactor (A) | Cable 15–25 m | Cable 50–75 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1500 | 24 | 70 | 35 mm² | 2 AWG |
- Cable length is positive plus negative; increase the size above 50 m total. Insulation rated 105°C or higher, marine-grade tinned copper.
- Battery: lead-acid, AGM, gel or similar, 150 Ah recommended. Li-ion or LiFePO4 not correctly specified will rapidly damage motor, control box and transmission.
- Command circuit fuse 5A; control wire 1,5 mm² – 14 AWG.
- The Lofrans breaker protects the line from short circuit and the motor from overheating; keep it dry and reachable, and use it to isolate the capstan from the controls.
- Wire all switches in parallel; fit at least two in case one fails. Control box in a dry place near the capstan.
Using the Warping Drum
- Take three laps of rope round the drum, in either direction.
- Hold the tail, press UP and carry out the mooring manoeuvre.
- Take the rope off the drum and make it fast to a bollard.
- Switch off the safety switch.
Mooring only: never anchor with the capstan, never put chain on the drum, and never use the capstan as a mooring point – hold the load on a cleat.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
| Use of the yacht | Less than 2 months | From 2 up to 6 | More than 6 | Charter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Every 3 months | A – A (as printed) | A – B | A – B | |
| Every 6 months | A – B | |||
| Every 12 months | A – B – C | C | C | C – D |
| Every 24 months | D | D | ||
| Every 36 months | D |
- A – Rinse with fresh water; no chlorine, bleach or acid; polish the stainless parts.
- B – Grease the rotating parts, especially the main shaft, with non-conductive yellow marine grease; check for corrosion and stress; anti-seize on the stainless screw threads.
- C – Check the motor terminals and the voltage drop at the terminals.
- D – Remove the capstan, clean the salt under base and deck flange, reapply anti-seize or non-conductive grease between base and flange.
| Problem | Possible cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Does not work when a control is operated | Protection switch OFF; low voltage; control box, command circuit or motor failure | Switch ON; check battery and connections; check/replace control box or control; measure motor voltage, clean brushes, else replace motor |
| Runs slowly, trips the breaker | Cable too small; poor connections; dirty brushes; water in the motor; gearbox damaged | Increase cable section; check connections; clean brushes; replace motor; (service) replace gearbox |
| Works in one direction only | Check 12/24V between B2–C and B3–C on the control box with the buttons pressed; if a relay does not work, replace the control box | |
| Motor runs, shaft does not turn | Keys between motor, coupling, gearbox and main shaft; broken motor spindle | (Service) dismantle and check the couplings; replace the motor |
Disconnect power before any maintenance. Warranty: 3 years limited (motors, electrics and seals 1 year).
