Values copied exactly as printed. Several AC and hydraulic columns are clearly inconsistent in the manual (for example 4400 / 1000 kg/lb, 121 / 60 kg/lb, light-duty length below heavy duty for the T1500/ST1500): treat them as as printed and confirm with us before choosing on those figures. 9cc and 11cc are the hydraulic versions.

Deck Thickness

Model Deck thickness
T500 18-30 mm
T700 / T1000 / ST1000 20-40 mm
ST1500 / ST1700 / T1500 / T1700 50-70 mm
ST2000 / T2000 60-90 mm
ST2500 / T2500 90-130 mm
ST3000 60-90 mm
ST4000 150 mm

Other deck thicknesses can be supplied on request. If the shaft and studs turn out short, the studs can be adapted only if the keyed shaft still engages the gearbox along its full length; otherwise order a longer shaft.

Fitting

  • In the box: capstan with gearbox and motor, control box (DC variants), drilling template, fixing deck studs.
  • Conductive hulls: non-conductive gasket under the capstan (not supplied); with a 2-terminal motor, bond the capstan to the cathodic protection.
  • Tape the drilling template to the deck, mark and drill; seat the upper part and seal the base with silicone, not permanent glue.
  • Below deck: grease the main shaft, join the reducer to the upper part, fit washers and nuts on the studs and tighten.
  • ST4000: the main shaft is inside the gearbox, so fit and seal the gearbox first, then the capstan; standard deck thickness 150 mm.
  • Wire the motor per the wiring diagrams (PDF pages 6–8) and keep motor and control box out of direct water.

  • Cable length is positive plus negative.
  • Control box (solenoids) or switchboard in a dry area near the capstan, no direct water contact.
  • Use the Lofrans breakers: selected for their trip curve, not a plain plate rating.
  • The wiring diagrams show the Thetis 1002 hand-held remote.

Using the Warping Drum

  1. Take three laps of rope clockwise round the drum.
  2. Hold the tail, press UP and carry out the mooring manoeuvre.
  3. Take the rope off the drum and make it fast to a bollard.
  4. Switch off the safety switch.

Capstans are for mooring only: never anchor with them, never put chain on the warping drum, and hold the load on a cleat or strong point, not on the capstan.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Every 3 months A – A (as printed) A – B A – B
Every 6 months A – B
Every 12 months A – B – C C C C – D

Every 36 months D – E E E
  • A – Rinse with fresh water; no chlorine, bleach or acid; polish the stainless parts.
  • B – Grease the rotating parts with non-conductive yellow marine grease, especially the main shaft threads and clutch cones; check for corrosion; anti-seize on the thread of the #730 conic screw (M10x30).
  • C – Check the motor terminals and the voltage drop at the terminals.
  • D – Replace all gaskets.
  • E – Remove the capstan, clean the salt under the base and re-seal.
Problem Possible cause Solution
Does not work when a control is operated Protection switch OFF; low voltage; control box, control or motor failure Switch ON; check battery and connections; check/replace control box or control; measure motor voltage, clean brushes, else replace motor
Runs slowly, trips the breaker Cable too small; poor connections; dirty brushes; water in the motor Increase cable section; check connections; clean brushes; replace motor
Upper deck and below-deck parts not parallel Work the surfaces and/or add shims
Gearbox has lost oil; motor strains (Service) find the leak, replace damaged parts, gaskets and screws; check cables, then brushes
Works in one direction only Check 12/24V between B2–C and B3–C on the control box with the buttons pressed; if a relay does not work, replace the control box
Motor runs, shaft does not turn Worn or broken wormwheel/worm teeth; broken motor spindle (Service) replace broken parts and check the oil for debris; replace motor; renew gaskets, screws, keys, circlips and oil at the same time
Shaft and studs too short on installation Wrong deck thickness ordered Adapt the studs if the keyed shaft engages the gearbox along its full length; otherwise order a longer shaft

Disconnect power before any maintenance. Warranty: 3 years limited (motors, electrics and seals 1 year).

Item numbers are drawing references, not order codes: send us the model, version (ALU/CRO), item number and description and we will source the part.

Deck Templates

  • Separate deck templates are in the downloads for T500, T700 / T1000, T1500, T1700, T2000, T2500, T3000 and T4000.
  • Each shows the cut-out (solid line), the overall footprint (dashed line) and the stud holes, with a Forward arrow.
  • Print at 100% (actual size). Lofrans warns the drawing may not be to scale once printed: measure the printed dimensions against the template before drilling.
