Application

  • For chain up to 10MM (3/8") short link in one continuous length; a smaller high tensile chain may be used to save weight. Rating approximately 3 times the combined weight of anchor and chain.
  • Kenter type shackles must pass through the chainwheel in the vertical plane; fit an anchor swivel shackle between anchor and chain.
  • Chain fit: standard chain known to Maxwell, or a 450mm (18") / 12 link sample (whichever is longer). Use with a Maxwell chainstopper of the appropriate size.
  • Supplied with the chainwheel to starboard; it can be changed to port in the field (move the pawl and pawl pin to port as well), so two units can be arranged as a handed pair.
  • Suitable hydraulic oils listed: Shell Rimula X 15W-40, Shell Myrina M 15W-40, Penzoil SAE 10W-40, Texaco 2109 SAE 15W, Texaco 1814 SAE 10W40, BP HLPHM 32-68, Castrol Hysin AWS 32-68, BP Autrans T0410.

Location & Wiring

  • Clear run from the bow/chain roller (vertical groove for the chain profile). Chainpipe outlet ideally over the locker with at least 600mm (2ft) clear fall; the chain must gravity feed unaided. Fasten the end of the chain to the boat.
  • Room to swing the clutch lever clear of pulpit, lifelines and bulwark; access through the deck for the supply lines. Chainpipe located as on the deck cutout detail drawing.
  • Footswitches at least 250mm (10") from the rear of the windlass, below-deck part dry. Reversing solenoid (dual direction) dry and close to the windlass, never in the chain locker.
  • Breaker/isolator panel in a dry place within 1.8 metres (72") of cable length from the battery – mandatory for U.S.C.G.
  • Controls wired in 1.5mm² (16AWG) with a manually resettable ignition proof 3 amp fuse or breaker within one metre (40") of the breaker/isolator panel. Seal terminals with CRC2043, CRC3013 or CRC2049.
  • Hydraulic: engine driven pump or single function power pack via a bi-directional solenoid valve; the controller must be in a dry area.

Mounting

  1. Bolt to the deck with four 12mm (½") 316 stainless steel bolts; back the nuts with large thick stainless washers or a stainless clamp plate bridging the forward and rear bolts.
  2. Steel or aluminium decks: insulate with a timber pad or non-conductive gasket, fixings through the insulators, underdeck fixings insulated, anchor and chain insulated from the hull.
  3. Deck and underdeck pad must carry the loads; the pad/deck area under the template must be smooth and flat. Mark out from the deck cutout detail drawing (marked for reference, not as a template) and drill the holes parallel and square to the mounting face.
  4. Windlass on its side, shaft vertical: oil half way up the sight glass; top up with SAE 90 (Shell Omala 320, Castrol Alpha SP320 or equivalent). Do not over fill.
  5. Bed the case with sealant, check the four insulating bushes are in place, stainless washers under the bolt heads, sealing compound on the bolts; clamp plates or large washers and nuts below. Tighten progressively and evenly – no power tools, do not overtighten.
  6. Fit the chainpipe through-bolted with 316 stainless countersunk screws (insulated on metal decks); align the stripper squarely in the chainwheel groove with its bevelled end close to, but clear of, the root.
  7. Motor cables: hold the lower nut while tightening the upper nut.
  8. Running gear: remove the stripper arm, cap, screw and retaining washer, clutch nut, then outer cone, chainwheel and inner cone. Coat the shaft and bronze clutch cones with Shell Nautilus NLG12 Marine Grease, Castrol Boating Grease, Valvoline Val Plex EP or equivalent; grease the shaft thread, bores and clutch faces (Shell Alvania R2, Castrol AP2) and reassemble with the keys properly seated.
  9. Boat builders: spray the topworks with CRC3097 “Long Life” and wrap in plastic film and tape for delivery.

Anchor

  • Never run under power with the lever in the clutch nut or emergency crank collar. Isolator “OFF” when not in use or before leaving the boat. Do not reverse before the windlass stops; give the motor time to cool.
  • Motor up to the anchor; break out a fouled anchor with the engine while the chainstopper takes the load; never use windlass or chainstopper as a mooring point; secure the anchor with a nylon line or pin under way.
  • Under power: tighten the clutch nut clockwise with the lever and REMOVE THE LEVER. For “DOWN” open the chainstopper and disengage the pawl; “UP” works with them engaged. Jog in the last metre carefully.
  • Manual lowering: clutches tight, stopper open, pawl off; standing clear, slowly back off the clutch nut; tighten to slow, ease to speed up. Never let the chainwheel free wheel.
  • Manual recovery: tie off the chain; loosen the clutch anticlockwise with the crank handle; engage the pawl and/or chain stopper; strip the windlass until the top of the chainwheel shows; lever the chainwheel round with the clutch lever spigot in the chainwheel hole; always re-engage the pawl or stopper before releasing pressure, and repeat.

Warping Drum

  1. The capstan works independently of the chainwheel. Engage the pawl with the chainwheel.
  2. Back off the clutch nut counter clockwise until it stops.
  3. Several turns clockwise on the drum, pull on the tail and press “UP”; tail load controls the hauling rate.
  4. Do not operate the footswitch accidentally while adding turns; keep fingers clear; never use so many turns that easing the tail will not let the rope slip.

Service

Interval Task
Every trip Ensure the clutch is adjusted correctly; wash the parts outside the case with fresh water.
3 monthly Strip and grease the clutch: remove the chainwheel set and grease the clutch faces and shaft bore.
12 monthly Service the motor (qualified electrician; more often in commercial use).
3 yearly Remove the gearbox, replace oil and seals – authorised Maxwell service technician.
  • Gearbox oil: 70ml (2.4 fl oz), SAE viscosity grade 90 -110 (e.g. Shell Omala 320, Castrol Alpha SP 320). Check the level every six months at the sight glass. Assembly drawing: fill with 65mils of Castrol Alpha SP 320 Oil.
  • Mainshaft and bearing: marine grease, lithium or lithium complex based (Duckhams ‘Keenol’, ‘Castrol LMX’) – no soap based grease. Above-deck components: CRC 3097 spray. Motor: CRC Soft Seal, including the electrical connections.
  • Brush sets: P100807 – 12 Volt, P100808 – 24 Volt.

Removing the Gearbox

  1. Remove both sets of running gear as in the installation steps.
  2. Remove the two circlips either side of the gearbox and slide the shaft out of the case.
  3. On the port side remove four bolts and washers and gently tap the gearbox assembly free of the case.
  4. Strip the gearbox with the gearbox drawing and parts list. The serial number location is marked on the gearbox drawing; quote model, serial number, power supply, drawing reference, item no., part no., description and quantity when ordering.
