  • Rated capacity and chain speed are based on the chainwheel for 10mm chain; other chainwheels may vary performance by up to ±10%.
  • Hydraulic oil: viscosity ISO 32 - 68 (at 20ºC); Shell Rimula X 15W-40, Shell Myrina M 15W-40, Penzoil SAE 10W-40, Texaco 2109 SAE 15W, Texaco 1814 SAE 10W-40, BP HLPHM 32-68, BP Autrans T0410.
  • Topworks: VWC (vertical windlass with chainpipe), VWCLP (with chainpipe, low profile), VW (vertical windlass), each clockwise or anticlockwise; drives electric DC (24V or 12V) or hydraulic. The extra deck clearance version extends the drive by 100mm.
  • Chainwheel numbers have a main part number and a suffix, e.g. 3231-001: the main number is the chainwheel type, the suffix the chain size and type. Correct fit needs calibrated chain to a recognised standard, correctly identified to Maxwell, or a chain sample.
  • Overall dimensions: drawing P10102 in the PDF; dimensions are typical across the range, read from the deck level.

Position & Mounting Area

  • Often installed in pairs (one clockwise, one anticlockwise) as an emergency backup. Choose the position with the hawse pipe and spurling pipe; the deckplate's narrower end points at the incoming chain.
  • Straight run from the bow roller with no more than 2° deviation from horizontal; roller groove to suit the chain, centre line tangential to the chainwheel. Side pocket anchors: chain roller above the hawse pipe.
  • A chain stopper is essential, aligned with the chain and at the right height, clear of the anchor shank; a tensioner to hold the anchor in its pocket is recommended. If the hawse pipe is angled outboard, angle the stopper by half that angle (vertical if under 4°).
  • Minimum 800mm (32") between the end of the spurling pipe and the chain piled in the locker; chain must gravity feed unaided. If possible the locker bulkhead runs between chainpipe outlet and gearbox. The gearbox can be indexed through several angles – keep the incoming chain clear of gearbox, motor and power lines.
  • Footswitches at least 700mm (28") from the windlass, below-deck part dry; motor starter (solenoid valves on hydraulic units) dry and close to the windlass, never in the chain locker.
  • Deck reinforcement must take loads beyond the breaking strength of the chain; mounting area perfectly flat and rigid (structural fillers if needed). Deck cutout drawing 3328 (2200 2500 VWC-VWCLP) is marked “do not use as a template, for reference only” – check every marked-out dimension before drilling and cutting.

Installing

  1. Strip the topworks: plastic cap, retaining screw and washer, clutch nut, drum (VW and VWC), upper cone and disc spring, stripper, chainwheel, disc spring, lower cone, key, retention clips, emergency crank collar, wave spring; then the deckplate screws and deckplate. Check every part against the parts list.
  2. Use anti-seize generously on threads, keys, keyways, main shaft and inside the spacer tube; coat the shaft with Shell Nautilus NLG12 Marine Grease, Castrol Boating Grease, Valvoline Val Plex EP or equivalent.
  3. Bed the deckplate (chainpipe and pawl already fitted) and fit studs, washers and nuts: tighten evenly to 35-40 Nm (25-30 ft lb).
  4. Offer up the drive from below without damaging the deck bearing; bolt deckplate and spacer tube together with the 3/8" hex head screws and spring washers to 35-40 Nm (25-30 ft lb).
  5. Chain counter: sensor goes in the Ø15mm hole in the deckplate (plastic plug); drill below for the cable.
  6. Slide on the emergency crank collar, spring and washer; fit the two retention clips (grease holds them); key in the lower keyway.
  7. Lower clutch cone seated on the retention clips, conical face greased with lithium marine grease; disc spring with its smaller diameter towards the cone; chainwheel; second disc spring with its bigger diameter towards the chainwheel; greased upper cone; drum (VW, VWC); clutch nut; retaining washer and screw; cap.
  8. Boat builders: treat with CRC 3097 Long Life and wrap in plastic film for delivery.

Power & Controls

  • Two cable, ungrounded, fully insulated negative return system; isolated earth motor. The DC motor has terminals F1, “-” and F2: “-” goes straight to battery negative, F1 is clockwise and F2 anticlockwise – connect the one for your rotation to the solenoid.
  • Hold the lower nut while tightening the upper nut on the motor terminals. Spray terminals with CRC 3013 Soft Seal or equivalent.
  • Hydraulic: connect pressure and return ports to a solenoid controlled valve (not supplied by Maxwell).
  • Controls (footswitches, single or dual speed pendant, helm switch, chain counter) are wired in parallel to the directional valve or starter, on 12 or 24V. With footswitches, fit an isolator for them in the wheelhouse. Control wiring no smaller than 1.5mm² (AWG 16), with a manually re-settable ignition proof 3A breaker or fuse within 1m (40") of the main breaker/isolator – mandatory for USCG, ABYC and NMMA.

Recommended wire sizes (battery → solenoid → motor → battery)

System Total cable length mm² / AWG Engine room correction
12v Up to 14m (46') 34 / 2 42 / 1
12v 14m - 16m (46' - 52') 42 / 1 –
12v 16m - 21m (52' - 69') 54 / 0 –
12v 21m - 26m (69' - 85') 67 / 00 –
24v Up to 24m (79') 14 / 6 16 / 5
24v 24m - 38m (79' - 124') 22 / 4 –

Sizes assume 90°C insulation and a maximum 10% voltage drop over the total length.

Anchor

  • Keep clear of the windlass; never operate from a remote station without a clear view; never run under power with the handle in the clutch nut or crank collar. Do not reverse before the windlass stops. Isolate the power when not in use.
  • Lowering under power: engage the friction clutch firmly clockwise (any position), remove the handle, release the pawl, chain stopper and tensioner (jog up to free the stopper pawl), then use pendant, helm switch or footswitch. The windlass runs only while the control is held.
  • Retrieving: clutch engaged, pawl released, stopper/tensioner off; motor over the anchor to reduce tension; jog in the last meter (3-4') carefully; re-engage stopper and tensioner; isolator off.
  • Manual lowering (quick drop, “quiet ship”, power loss): tighten the clutch, release stopper/tensioner, then slowly ease the clutch nut anticlockwise and regulate the speed – never let the chain free fall unrestricted.
  • Emergency crank: stopper or pawl engaged, release the clutch, put the spigot end of the lever into the emergency crank collar and engage a chainwheel dog at the furthest forward position, pull back, engage the pawl, repeat. Very slow – emergencies only.

Warping Drum (VW, VWC)

  1. Engage the chain stopper and/or pawl and fully disengage the clutch.
  2. Control warping with the footswitch for one-person operation.
  3. Several turns on the drum in the direction of rotation, pull the tail for grip while operating the footswitch; no more turns than needed and let the line slip under sudden loads.
  4. Stay clear of lines and capstan and avoid riding turns (they can only be cleared by paying out).

Schedule

When Task
Every trip Check the clutch is correctly engaged; wash the external parts with fresh water.
Every three months Strip the topworks to the deckplate, clean, inspect and grease (lithium complex, waterproof), especially both clutch cone faces; grease the deckplate bearing through the nipple if fitted. Clean chrome with kerosene and spray CRC Long Life (printed “CRC 3037”), CRC 6-66 or WD-40. Touch up below-deck paint and spray CRC 3013 Soft Seal.
Every year Remove gearbox/spacer tube and flush the drainage slots with fresh cold water; remove and service the DC motor (brushes P100807 12V, P100808 24V).
Every 3 years Detach gearbox and spacer tube (support the drive); clean and apply Res-Q-Steel to the mating faces; drain via the two lowest plugs, replace seals, flush, and fill completely with new oil – approximately 800ml (27 fl oz). Never mix oils.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible cause → solution
Windlass does not move No power to controls → isolator for controls ON, check the fuse, wiring and each control in turn; incorrect wiring → check against the diagrams; no power to the windlass → check supply lines, main isolator, hydraulic pump.
Cannot pull the specified load Motor voltage does not match the supply → check the motor name plate; hydraulic relief valve set wrong → check the setting.
DC motor draws high current but struggles Motor mounting bolts touching the winding → spring washers, adjust bolt length.
Runs but chainwheel stays stationary Tighten the clutch; topworks key not installed → install it.
Motor stops after prolonged heavy use Overheated → let it cool and reset the breaker.
Anchor does not free fall Clutch cones not greased, clutch not fully disengaged, disc springs not fitted, or pawl engaged.
Chain jumps / slips Wrong chainwheel (identify the chain to Maxwell); chain twisted between windlass and roller; vertical angle of the incoming chain over 2 degrees.
