Breaker (12V / 24V) 80amp / 40Amp 80amp / 40Amp 135amp / 80Amp 135amp / 80Amp
  • TASMAN 8: up to 8mm chain and up to 25kg anchors. TASMAN 6: up to 6mm chain and up to 16kg anchors.
  • Supplied with solenoid, remote up/down panel, breaker/isolator, deck cutout details, motor bolt kit (2 bolts, 2 spring washers, Ø50mm O-ring), rope and chain fitted, and mounting kit (6 each bolts, nuts, flat and spring washers).
  • Rope: braided rope made for drum winches. Maxwell does not recommend 3 strand or 8 braid: soft lay buries into the stack under load and less fits on the drum. When re-roding, never exceed drum capacity.

Position & Mounting

  • Exactly on the bow roller centreline, rotation axis perpendicular to it, so the rode stows evenly; the rode must feed onto the full drum width without fouling roller side plates or deck opening.
  • Check gearbox rotation; it can run in reverse but maximum holding load drops to 1500kg (from 2000kg).
  • Flat deck (plinth if needed) of adequate strength; bow roller with a central groove for the chain size.
  • Use the deck mounting template (check the printout is correctly scaled), check under-deck clearances, seal hole edges with epoxy on GRP or wood, tighten nuts progressively and evenly – no power tools.
  • Mainshaft-to-gearbox interface is anti-seized at the factory: re-apply if the shaft is removed.

Motor/Gearbox Angle

  1. Remove circlip and key; slide the gearbox off the shaft.
  2. With the gearbox flat (output shaft vertical) remove the 4 × M6 cap screws securing the leg support – careful not to spill oil.
  3. Separate just enough to break the seal and rotate to the new position: 18 possible positions in 15° increments; keep the input gear at least partly in oil.
  4. Loctite the 4 × M6 screws, torque to 7Nm and refit to the drum.

Wiring & Cable Sizes (Table 2.1)

  • Install to USCG, ABYC, NMMA or local rules. Solenoid pack dry and close to the winch; breaker/isolator within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the battery; remote panel where the winch can be seen.
  • Hold the lower motor terminal nut while tightening the upper nut. Seal terminals and motor body with CRC 3013 Soft Seal (or CRC2043 / CRC2049).
Model Cable length (battery → motor → battery) 12V 24V
TASMAN 6 (600w) Up to 10m (35') 16 mm² / 6 AWG 4 mm² / 10 AWG
TASMAN 6 (600w) 10m - 20m (35' - 65') 25 mm² / 4 AWG 6 mm² / 8 AWG
TASMAN 6 (600w) 20m - 28m (65' - 91') 35 mm² / 2 AWG 10 mm² / 8 AWG
TASMAN 8 (1000w) Up to 10m (35') 25 mm² / 4 AWG 10 mm² / 6 AWG
TASMAN 8 (1000w) 10m - 20m (35' - 65') 35 mm² / 2 AWG 10 mm² / 6 AWG
TASMAN 8 (1000w) 20m - 28m (65' - 91') 50 mm² / 0 AWG 16 mm² / 4 AWG

Sizes assume 90°C insulation and a maximum 10% voltage drop over the total length.

Normal Use

  • Engage the breaker, toggle down to pay out – keep load on the rode so the drum cannot overrun and tangle; disengage the breaker once set.
  • Toggle up to retrieve while motoring up to the anchor; bring the last meter (3') in slowly. Never pull the boat to the anchor or break out a fouled anchor with the winch.
  • Don't use the winch as the mooring point overnight, and don't rely on it to hold the anchor in the roller – use a tensioner or snubber. Wait for the winch to stop before reversing.
  • Rope tail is looped through the eyelet and round the shaft; the eyelet is not for anchoring loads – always keep at least 1 layer of rope on the drum.

Emergency Free Fall

  • Temporarily secure the anchor, remove the spring clip at the gearbox end of the shaft and pull the key (the clip helps).
  • Spray lubricant into the keyway, stand clear and lower by hand or let it free fall; then tie off to a hard point or refit key and clip.
  • Recover by hand, stowing loosely or winding the drum manually.
  • Afterwards remove the shaft from the gearbox, clean, inspect and re-apply anti-seize.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Interval Work
Every trip Wash down with fresh water.
Every 3 months Clean with a kerosene (paraffin) damp cloth, spray CRC3097 Long Life (or CRC6-66 / WD40), polish; check fasteners.
Every year Motor serviced by a qualified technician; remove rust and repaint; remove mainshaft and re-lubricate the gearbox/mainshaft interface.
Every 3 years Inspect gearbox seals and replace as necessary.
  • Grease: lithium complex, NLGI No.1 to No. 2. Gearbox oil: 90 – 100ml (3.0 – 3.4 fl oz), API GL-4 or lower (low sulphur), 90 to 110 weight; synthetic only, never mix.
  • Anti-corrosion: CRC 3013 Soft Seal, Boeshield T9, Lanocote, International Paints Res-Q-Steel. Make sure the key is seated on reassembly; never wrap the motor in grease cloth.
  • Won't rotate: controls isolator, fuse, each control, wiring, main supply. Can't pull rated load: check motor voltage plate. Stops after heavy use: let it cool and reset the breaker.

Chain Counter Kit P90022 (TASMAN 8)

  • Fits an AutoAnchor counter; every model except the AA150 works on drum winches (sensor not included).
  • Sensor cable-tied to the support leg; replace the large flat washer at the shaft end with the magnet holder using the longer bolt: bolt, spring washer, magnet holder, composite thrust washer (13mm spanner).
  • Counter setup: Rode → Drum Winch, then total rode length and inside/outside diameter.

Counter accuracy is typically within ±10% because of rope stretch and how the rode lays on the drum.

Intermediate Bow Rollers

  • Fit between bow and drum winch so the warp stows evenly; sliding roller, hoop keeps the warp on; polished 316 stainless.
  • Suitable for 6mm (1/4") to 8mm (5/16") chain and up to 10mm line.
  • Optimum roller width = A /(A+B) × drum width. Rule of thumb: A > B use P105094, A < B use P105093. Optimum fleet angle is no more than 4°.

Deck Cutout Templates

  • Separate deck cutout drawings for TASMAN 6 and TASMAN 8 are in the downloads (A3, drawn 1:1). Print at 100% on A3 and check the marked dimensions on the printout before drilling.
  • Check all under-deck clearances first and drill deck bolt holes parallel and square to the mounting faces.
  • The templates printed at the back of the manual are marked NOT TO SCALE.
